    Newbie with a E28 M535i

Hello everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself and my latest addition to the family, Fünf (not the dog, she's Scooby-Douche), that I picked up last week. I bought the car from another forum member (GCM535i) and have just left it in to get some work done whilst in China - if anyone can recommend a good sprayer please let me know! No doubt I will need some parts, advice on upgrades and so on in the coming weeks so I look forward to hearing from you all. Cheers, Ian
  2. Hi guys I've owned a few 5 series (e39 530i Sport) and recently bought a 2013 730d M Sport (LCI). I had had a look at 7 series forums and they are not as active as in here, hence I'm being a traitor and looking to join here, go on..... let me in.....5 series....7 series, if you squint they look similar Anyway, I'm in Lanarkshire just outside Glasgow, recently started carefully coding the 7 series and I'm over the moon with the small differences it's made (Alarm beep on, Sports display, MPH display, ///M Start up etc) Cheers Charlie

I have had tons of cars but just recently i have purchased my forever car. My 525i, I won't go into to much detail about the car but i will post on the build page as I will be piling a lot of updates in on the build to make it my perfect car. Thanks Jordan Howie

    advise for a possible newbie?

Hey Guys and Gals, I am just starting the hunt for my next possible whip, narrowed down to the BMW 5 series (as I love the shape) however im not experienced with these cars so could I ask for advise ( not looking for massive debates just down to earth god fearing straight advice) what do I go for basically.... im a high mileage user family of 4 my journey is just over an hour each day all motorway round trip of 110 miles give or take ! I like my cars to look the part so was thinking of the M sport but engine choice is sticky for me do I look at the 525d or the 520d I want manual also as I prefer to drive my own car and have never liked an auto box, I want something from 2005 to 2006 reg as that's what my budget is going to allow for now sub 4k .... thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to the advice Jonathan
  5. HI everyone! I've recently been given a pay rise to fund a new car at work. I don't think my bosses are too happy with me running around in my beat up old Renault Clio (despite the fact that it's hella reliable & does crazy MPG for a naturally asperated petrol, it is untidy and slower than most HGV's from a standing start!). Plus I'm doing a lot more miles per year now. I did about 20,000 last year. So I want something comfier and yet reliable! (and I'm about to move further away from work so this will increase!) I'm not into buying brand new cars though, and would much rather spend £4-£5k on something second hand and get it paid off as quickly as possible. I have a few decent trips planned this year and so was thinking the extra space of an estate might be ideal really. At first I was looking at Merc W211's. But as most have auto boxes (whcih I've never really been a fan of) and I've no experience with Mercs really, I started looking at BMW's as I have some experience with these owning an E36 328i Sport on the side. So I started looking at E61's (Diesel versions). I've read up a few things online about them, but wondered if anyone could direct me to a buyers guide or anything? Or let me know what I should be looking at if I go look at some? I'm not put off by general maintenance. Suspension etc. I've managed at home before on other cars. Clutches/gearboxes are a little more difficult but again I can usually find some way to work on them. I've read about swirl flaps which don't seem to difficult to resolve. I've come across a couple with the faulty air suspension at the rear. Again, expensive but seems like a fairly easy fix. DPF's are what put me off a bit. Cars in my price range are going to be over 100,000 miles and I'm worried if I buy and E61 diesel with these miles I'm going to have to replace the DPF straight away. I have to join a motorway wherever I go from my house, so I think my lifestyle could manage maintaining/regenerating a DPF. Really is there any way to check the DPF is on its way out? Finally, I notice all seem to come with iDrive installed? I've never used this system so pardon my ignorance: - Do any have DAB radios? - Can you plug iPhones in to them to play music from a phone? Sorry for the long post! Thanks for the help in advance!

    Er...hello :)

Well, hello all, completely new to these forums and know bugger all about BMW's the right place to come to? Ok so I'm here to learn a bit, tell you a bit about me. I am a contractor who operates a single director Limited Company, looking at buying a company car. Trawling through lots of sites of late, then I discover the 5 series BMW ( yes I've seen them throughout my 40 something life ) but I am really really noticing them now. How efficient, luxurious, gadget laden, just right up my street basically. So I am seriously seriously considering a 5. 520 Efficient Dynamics ( Blue Performance.) Professional Media 2012 ( 62 pref ) for under 12k Ok ok I set my sights very high I know , but hey, why not take a chance. Anyway, I'd love to hear from other folk with this spec. Many thanks in advance Colin.....

    newbie with 550i

hi just picked up my 2006 550i SE last week in Spain (expat living here). 56,000 kilometres, active steering, dynamic drive, electric rear sun blind, auto mirrors, comfort seats with heating and cooling, xenon/apaptive lights, nav pro. No manual but have worked most things out with this and other forums being very helpful, Last BMW was an e46 M3, have to say I don't think there is much difference between them power wise, M3 was probably a bit quicker of the mark but the 550i might feel quicker in the midrange(figures say more torque I think). Had the M3 four years ago so hard to remember that well. Love the 550i plenty of power and first auto I have ever had. Did I trip from Madrid to Valencia(300ks) with comfort seats, cruise control and auto box it was the most comfortable and easiest 300 ks I have ever driven. First thing I would like to add is a dension 500s unit, I currently have a six disc changer and that and solo cd both play mp3's so hoping(from what I have read this will be a straight forward plug and play without any coding/updates from dealer) Later down the line I would like some bigger wheels but just going to enjoy the car for now. one question for now, there is a button/nodule above the footrest, any idea what is is? thanks
  12. So I have bought myself a 2000 520i se 2.2, it has 80k on it an set me back 1k (GBP). I have been driving it for about a week and have a few problems that I could do with trying to sort: - When the rear window heating is on there is static from the radio, reading up it sounds like a common problem and there is a dodgy earth, has anyone a bit of a guide on how to fix? - The parking sensors don't work, listened and the rear and front left aren't buzzing so I assume these are causing the problem, not bothered about the front, if I took a working one from the front and put it in the place if the broken rear will this make the rear work again? Or do all need to be working? - Flicking through the computer and it says the temp is -40.0 - the Max "cold" button doesn't do anything, light doesn't come on when pressed, possibly something to do with the temperature being wrong as above. - sometimes it takes like 5+ seconds to start up as apposed to the approx 2 seconds as usual, and when this happens there seems to be a proper lack of power but turn of and on again and works fine??? - The clutch randomly stayed flat to the ground? Kicked it a few times and it eventually popped back up, going through the previous owners paperwork and he took this to a garage who replaced the clutch think this will resolve the problem but it still seems to happen? Possibly need the clutch bleeding, gonna take it back to the garage asap. Any advice on any of these problems would be much appreciated. Cheers Rob

  19. Hello All, My name is Matt and I live in Gloucester. I have owned three beemers in the Past. A 3,5 and 7 series but have decided that now was the time time to sell my trusty CLK230 and go back to a proper car. I was looking for a few months, when I came across this 530d, which was owned by a chap in Edinburgh (member of the BMW Car Club and thoroughly nice chap). So last Saturday I hopped on a train to Edinburgh to collect my new toy. Oh my god am I impressed, all they way back from Edinburgh (395 miles) at 80mph and averaged 46.3mpg!!! However all is not good with the car, as on the way back, whilst in the services (At night), as I pulled back from my parking bay, the bumper caught on the kerbstone and managed to rip itself in two . So as we speak she is in the body shop having the bumper replaced and having the read boot debadged. She has the M Sport kit on it and several of the options. I am hoping to use this forum to meet people and glean information on my new baby. Plans for 2013 - Bilsteins and slighty lowered (30mm), Angel eye and clear indicator conversions, private plate going on, being re-mapped in September, Parrot Bluetooth and iPhone system being fitted, detailing to be done at Ti22 and windows to be given a slight tint! Look forward to meeting some of you soon, is there ever any meets?? Thanks Matt P.S What do you all think to having my wheels painted white? Or should I leave well alone? And after I damaged the front (boooooo!)
  20. A week into my fifth round of BMW ownership I am cooling my heels in a motel in central Germany waiting for the local dealership to open on Monday morning. Germany is grim on a Sunday. The supermarket across the road is shut. The restaurants are shut. And the garages are shut. Those of you with knowledge of these things will tell me I'm wasting my time (I've just found the you-tube clip about pressing the trip odometer button a squillion times) but it's too late. It's been carried off to Karl and Co to await their ministrations tomorrow. So I'm stranded in a motel looking for forums (fora?) to join. BMW5 came third after Whatsoninkandahar, Weeblelovers and carpetsforthe21stcentury. Until this morning my "new" E61 530xi was going well. It had cruised comfortably for 400 miles without a murmur. After two days of inaction it cruised perfectly this morning. And to be fair, it was still cruising well when I called the breakdown man. But if the dashboard tells you, for the third time, that the engine is overheated and you must stop, you sort of have to pay attention when there's still another 1500 miles to go. I know, I know, it will turn out to be a dodgy sensor and everyone will giggle and point. But what if a liquorice alsort or something had got jammed in the water pump and the engine had gone bang? And why, in the name of all that's holy, did they decide not to put a temperature gauge on the dashboard? It's like swapping the tachometer for a valve bounce warning light. Anyway, that's filled in another half hour of nut-crunching tedium. Right, what to do next? Ah yes, the crochetfanbois forum looks exciting. But wait... they tell me there's a beer machine in the foyer. Bye for now!
  21. Hi All Well I've done it, after a pretty horrible accident where a guy fell asleep and wrote my car off by crashing into me head on I have now decided to defect to BMW. Test drove the car at the weekend, like new and pick it up in a week or ten days. I've had well spec'd cars before, Volvo's and Ford's but not BMW. So any advice for a new owner would be good. I plan to add a 5yr service plan to it but have been unsuccessful in securing anything below £475 from the supplying dealer. I thought the dealer owned these at a bit over £300, but they insist that they get no commission from BMW on the sale (?? not sure that this is likely). They were keen to sell me ridiculously expensive Supagaurd, which I can do myself for 1/10th of the price if I want to. I have not used the iDrive system before and the sat nav I saw looked pretty ancient in it's interface (though it does support full post code) another dealer showed me a video of the nav screen in Oct 2012 car (not Feb 2013 as this) and it looked much more up to date, are there differing software versions and can I get BMW to bring the software in the car uptodate if it is not? Generally any advice on the car (and real world Mpg expectations) would be great. Very excited Thanks

  24. Hi guys, I'm going to have a look at this tomorrow after a few months of trawling the net for a straight looking 39. What should I be checking for? Thanks, in advance, for the help. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305317035974/sort/locasc/usedcars/maximum-age/over_10_years_old/fuel-type/petrol/model/5_series/make/bmw/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/postcode/g314st/page/2/radius/100?logcode=p
  25. Hi guys, I'm 30, live in Glasgow and have owned many cars over the years. The most enjoyable car I've ever owned was a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0i 16v redtop, loved that car. Since 2008 I owned a C280 W202, it was a really nice car, I was a regular on the Merc forums, then after a mishap with some after market wheels I had to scrap the car, I bought a really rough E39 523i just as a runaround and I was hooked after a drive up the A9 through Glencoe, even though the MPG is terrible and the buttons and trim in the cabin are so cheap they sometimes fall off in your hands, the way you can throw it around on a country road makes it all worth it. But as I said it was really rough and I scrapped it rather than waste money on an MOT. That was about 6 months ago and I've been scouring the internet looking for a nice straight 39 near Glasgow. I'm going to have a look at this tomorrow. What should I be checking for? Thanks, in advance, for the help. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305317035974/sort/locasc/usedcars/maximum-age/over_10_years_old/fuel-type/petrol/model/5_series/make/bmw/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/postcode/g314st/page/2/radius/100?logcode=p PS. I posted this in the wrong section initially, apologies.
