M3 was due a gearbox oil change and as generally reported they aren't the smoothest box so i looked around as to what was good.

Royal purple MTF seems to be well regarded and recommended for ATF applications. especially the M3 so i bought 2 quarts from monkfish performance on ebay (good price, quickly delivered ) as iridium engineering never seemed to have stock.

Did the change yesterday and the old stuff was darker than i would have liked so a change was due and popped in the new.

So far i've only done a few miles but it does feel slicker.

I'll give it a while and if good will order some up for the e28 dogleg!

Thus far all good.

Hello all newbie here.

I currently own a 2001 e39 525i sport which my wife has managed to have an arguement with a post in a car park and lost!!! This has resulted in a scuffed bumper(only just resprayed last week) and a cracked lens cover on my drivers side angel eye. I have been trying to source a cheap second hand hella angel eye but am finding it really difficult, i don't really want to fork out £200 plus or a new unit as only the lens cover is smashed.

Does anyone know if i can just get a lens cover or have to bite the bullet and change the whole unit? If this is the case am i better trying to buy just the drivers angel eye or swap both out for an aftermarket set with led halos or are they just cheap crap?

Hello everyone I have a 540i that I should really be breaking but I can't do it!!
I have started tinkering and will try to repair even though it's financially stupid! Plus the colour is definitely an aquired taste.

I am in the process of replacing the can cover gaskets, excellent tips found on this forum. My question is how can I replace the injector wiring clips when refitting? Any tips appreciated as they were rascals to take off!

Is it only BMW that can supply the rubber rocker cover bolt o rings?

Is there a proceedure that I should take to protect Ecu when removing the battery, as with modern vehicles? The owners manual states a standard removal proceedure, just wanted to check.

08 lci 525d m sport poor quality sound aux connection

Hello -

dont know if this is a common problem - tried using the aux stereo connection for the first time this week with my iphone and have to say am pretty disappointed at the result. (this is the connection in the back seat next to the 12v sockets)

I needed to turn the volume right up past the radio/cd setting volume to hear it clearly and the sound quality is far worse. The cable is definately pushed right in at both connections.

Is this the genuine sound or do i have a problem with the stero or a rubbish cable - i am going to try a new cable but wondered if this is common or not?

If this answered elsewhere then apologies, but cant find.

On the system I've got an 'Aux-In connection in the Menu, but cant get anything out of it.
I have plugged my Ipod to 'aux' plug in the centre consol (behind the consol), but nothing.

Dont appear to have a USB connector anywhere (not that I can find anyway).

You probably need more info I know but is connecting an Ipod possible to this model without spending a fortune ??

Brake fluid change

The little brake fluid change light has been on since I bought the M5 a couple of months back. After having the front discs and pads changed I think it's time to do the brake fluid - and the fact the light is on means I should get it done. Dick Lovett Hungerford who are very close to me, have quoted £82 inclusive to do it on their M Value programme. That sounds pretty fair to me; they also say it's standard fluid and not special stuff for the M5 - is that right??

Picked her up from the body shop on thursday from having the front end to the doors resprayed,rear strip below boot lid treated for rust and the headlights wet sanded.when i got home my first mod was to change to angel eye bulbs for some white ones.
saturday i clayed polished and waxed it in dodo juice purple haze.
Pictures never show up this colour properly i feel might be as I'm using my phone, but anyway heres a few pics

MID Retrofit Done!

So managed to get some time to get this installed tody.

I only managed to get a few pictures as my phone battery died just after I took the stero out!

For anyone that is interested though.

I disconnected the battery before I did anything

Step:

1. Remove old stereo
2. Remove carpet side trim next do passenger side right leg
3. Remove Glove Box 10mm nuts
4. Remove white/cream plastic box with 10mm and unclip from the top 2 clips this just pulls away
5. Remove big black wire box 2 clips either side
6. Look at the bottom of the black wire box and you will see the clips that hold the wires in push all 3 through and it will pull out the brown/black, grey/red and white/grey/yellow blocks.
7. Connect the 3 cables provided in the retrofit kit next in the next avaliable slot and push into place A2/A3/A4 in the retrofit guide
8. Drop the fusebox down with the two white clips. Remove the fuse box clips infront of fuses 10 & 35
9. You now need to fit the two last cables into fuse 5 & 6 (in my car fuse 5 was unused where as fuse 6 was being used) when you look at fuse 6 the bottom metal connector is being used but the top is not. I did try and remove this but it would not budge so I used the wire crimps that come with the kit. To do this I got my wire stripper out and stripped just enough to clip it in. Fuse 5 uses the violet/brown cable just slot it in the then use the 5amp fuse provided. fuse 6 is now connected and now you can plug the 30amp fuse back in, itshould be green
10. Thread the top of the cable up through the bulkhead into the stereo area.
11. Connect the top stereo back in with the old cables for your RDS stereo
12. Connect the bottom mid unit in with the new cable
13. Put eveything back in reverse of how you took it apart.
14. Connect battery back up
15. Turn on stereo and check its got power.
16. Code the unit to the car. To do this connect car to DIS, Ignition on, select Coding ZCS, Choose E39, Retrofit, Radio with MID this will take about a minute, Ignition off 10 seconds, back on and all should be working perfectly!

All done and im very happy. it looks loads better than the standard unit and now I can get my new Ipod connection and get the songs to come up.

Up next M5 brakes will try and do a proper picture write up for that one.

530d, wornout M sport suspension, what to buy

Hi there.
I see that the 530d is much more popular here than in Iceland so I decided to ask you guys.

Since I changed almost every bushing in the car (except the strut/shock top mount) and It´s still knocking on every bump I´ve decided to buy new top mounts and springs and shocks n struts.
Are the top mounts the same in M sport and the regular non dsp?
Is there anything else i should consder buying?
I will go for the original M sport suspension springs and struts and shocks

the things that are new so far are the control and the trailing arms front and rear suspension, stabilizers, guiding links. But still íts knocking on every bump.

Hi Guys

I have 6 weeks ago taken "the plunge" and have bought myself a '56 E60 (530d).

The car came with 12 months MOT but I was aware that the rear pads needed doing in 1000miles.

That time is now on me and I have called up Coopers of Sunderland (BMW Dealer) who have quoted me £206.

Now while I could go ahead with that (is that about right?); I have a couple of questions for you experts please;

1) If I were to go to an indepenant BMW Specialist, would that re set my dashboard messages "Rear Brakes need replacing".

2) Does anyone have any "preferred" BMW specialist that they use (in and around Sundelrand SR3).

Often in forum topics I see "read the codes" or similar remarks.
I have INPA and have dabbled with it, and I get the general idea, but how do you gurus out there use it?

For example:-
Is there a way to globally scan for any/all errors, rather than go to each individual module?
Is there a reference manual/guide anywhere to help interpret any codes?
Similarly, is there a good reference to check the dynamic values against?

I also have the demo version of PA scanner which I can use to scan for codes, but it won't do any diagnosis or allow writing to clear codes.

So for example, if I have a problem with (say) my transmission, is there any way that I can get INPA to tell me, rather than me going in to the module and asking it?

Hi all,

After changing the signal camshaft position sensor as it was showing a fault. I cleared the codes and after driving the car for 100miles or so this fault has now appeared.

Has anyone had the same code appear, or know what could be wrong?

Went to PPC In the Park yesterday at Mallory Park and treated the old girl to a few blasts on the track

Here are a few pics

Was Very pleased with the car on the track.

Session 1 was wet and half way into it a car dropped oil all over the track and it came to a standstill for a while.
Session 2 was later in the afternoon, much better was lapping at a 64 second avg with a best of about 58. Very happy for road tyres, the first outing on the M5 and at Mallory

Will get the vids up from the GoPro's once i get some time this week and get some of the waiting bits edited out

I managed to get my personal best mpg as well during my two track sessions ( vids follow )

its off a 535i part no.1 277 358 and it has 81 also stamped on it

i looked it up to check the part no. out and if i was correct i think the cam is up rated ?

it said the b32 has 256 bhp ??

or is this somthing else and im getting mixed up ?

i've noticed today that when i get to about 2400rpm,6th gear the turbo whistle drops away and it stops pulling like a train.
i couldn't get it to go over 80mph.

I was pumping the accelerator from about half way to the floor and back and it was having no effect at all.

When going through the gears it pulls well,but i did notice at about 3000rpm in 3rd gear the turbo tailed off considerably.

Has anybody had any similar symptoms?
It may be wishful thinking but i'm wondering if this could be a throttle sensor issue as opposed to turbo issues as the turbo does work fine at the lower rev range.

A silly question on sterring column

I am removing the steering column surrounds on the 92 E34, it has adjustable back and forward motoion but not tilt

I have removed the steering wheel and the top cover,

But the bottom cover is gettong to me I cannot get off, iys prob something sill I am missing but cant see it.

Any ideas would help

Jumped on the 08.43 train to head down to Kirkcaldy to get my new (to me) E39.  I have to say that the day went really well!  The train departed on time, arrived at Perth on time, I changed trains, and it departed on time, and arrived at Inverkeithing on time, where Scott, better known to some of you as The Flying Banana, picked me up.  Had a bit of lunch, then Scott took me over to Kirkcaldy to pick the car up

So - the car - was it as good as I hoped?  Well, mostly.  Wheels were refurbed, but the paint is a bit on the grey side of silver.  Good enough finish, but could do with being brighter.  I might see if someone in Inverness will spray them over again for not much money.

A couple of tools missing from the set, which were replaced 5 minutes after I got home.  Spare wheel is the narrower of the two sizes, but wearing a 255 tyre, which is pretty near done, so I need a part worn 235 45 17 for a spare.  Anyone got one?

Body wise, a rest bubble on the bonnet I didn't notice until I got home, the rest is pretty much as expected for a 2003 car.  Scott says I need to strip the polish, clean all the residue in the crevices out and re-do.  He's right, and I will.  Due to the rust bubble and a few stone chips, I might get the bonnet painted.  Any ideas how much that might cost?

Inside is great. but the dash was covered in that silicon shite thar car dealers use.  I've got most of it off, but I'll get into it tomorrow.  Leather is still matt in finish, but is drying out a bit, so the conditioner is coming out.  The interior really looks fantastic - a great combo.

Engine wise, all seems to be as it should.  Oil up to the level, so is water and other fluids.  Rad isn't bowing out, but looks original.  Has a Behr sticker on it with the BMW roundel.  I'm going with the original plan, and will replace the rad, expansion tank, water pump and thermostat.  Where's the cheapest ( and best ) place to get quality replacements?  I was thinking C3BMW.co.uk?

I've discovered that the car is a dealer plus two owner car (three now!), and came from Sytner in London.  Good enough excuse to put in the Sytner dealer sticker and tax disc holder!  Genuine Sytner keyrings already deployed!

Everything works superbly, the car handles well, rides well, and I love driving it.  Efortless, and averaged 32.1 mpg today.  It's well over a year since I sold my last BMW, the E34, but the driving experience today, although hugely improved, was nicely familiar.

Many thanks to Scott for ferrying me around today, I really enjoyed the company, and being able to talk about cars without getting my ear bent, as I do at home - 1 Wife, 3 Daughters, co car craic!!

Battery drain update..

Well after months of disconnecting the battery between use i thought may be i should just get out there and fight this problem head on.
Did the usual like disconnect the fsu, no change.
I disconnected the motorola carphone and it looks like i have found the culprit.
Now, using in line ammeter it pulls 5A with interior lights on, 1A with them off.
I pushed the boot catch in to trick it into thinking it's shut and so that i had access to the battery and fuses.
Set the alarm and it reads 700 milliamps, after 16 minutes i presume it falls asleep, i have a reading of 30 milliamps which sounds good to me, this would take weeks to run down a 90 a/h batt.
If someone could confirm that 30ma is ok i would be grateful.
I just pulled the plug out where the handset is. It had been playing up for a while anyway with a red light on constantly.

Auto gearbox fault codes

Hi All,

I've just run inpa on my '02 3.0 touring and it came up with 3 fault codes for the autobox regarding the clutch slipping too much.

2 of the faults occured at 98,000 miles and the again at 106,800, the car has now done 107,200 miles.

As far as I know the gearbox has never been serviced, and I've only had it for about 2 months.

Never noticed any problems with the box, it sometimes has a very slight whine when you pull away and occasionally feels like it's going into first with a little thump.

Should I get it serviced or am I better of just leaving it well alone!

Poor washer jets? Problem solved - New style of jet!

As we all know, the E39 has poor washer jet nozzles and 99 times out of 100 you always end up with the near side bottom corner of the windscreen filthy with a dry trail of dirt after attempting to wash the screen - even with properly aimed jets.

I have cured this by fitting Ford Focus C-Max "fan" style jets which give a very wide angle of aim and mist the water all over the screen too!

Nice cheap little mod for £10 all in - including brand new jets, a pair of non return valves and a pair of T pieces and some new rubber tubing.

The C-max jets are a perfect fit once you file a 1mm slot in the front so the bonnet recess hole can lock them in place at the front of them.

Very worthwhile mod and they are heated too so just swap over the BMW loom plug on to them and you're away

E39 / M52 Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement Guide (PDF)

Here's my helpful little DIY guide on replacing your crankshaft position sensor (CKS) - applicable to my car a February 1997 528i SE auto with 76k and full history, which was running poor and threw an error code. It is a 1.77Mb PDF document attached to this post.

Replacing the sensor was not cheap (£100) but more than worth it in smiles alone.

Other symptoms of poor running can confuse the issue, so always get your codes read first before spending money.

In addition to the CKS I've also had a service carried out and a new BMW fuel pump - another enjoyable investment on a car of this age and mileage. (76k)

I enjoyed writing this and doing the job, so hopefully it will help others.

hello i have a 2000 535i steptronic with a gearbox problem tried finding the money to get it sorted but gave up on it and bought a 525i manual very cheap (accident damaged) so now the v8 must go anyone interested ? it drives fine until it hits third then over revs dont want to think about it anymore ive lost so much money on it now its of the road at my brothers he has a track to and past his house for anyone wishing to try it but please no time wasters please think what the scrap is on 1.5 tons of motor look i really want to see this go to a good home ... oh yeah its blue with cream leather thanks martin

Hi I've got a 2003 525d es saloon with sports suspension its done 84k. Lately I've noticed that it sits a good 20mm lower on the drivers side rear wheel. in fact this wheel is almost inside the arch compared to the other side. I've jacked it up and expected to see a broken rear spring, but couldn't see anything. Although the top of the spring isn't visible. So I still can't discount this. I've levered as many bushes as I could and didn't notice any undue play. There does seem to be a bit more play on this side when I pull on the whole strut, so I am suspecting the top mount. Has anyone else experienced this?

How much coolant for my 525d is needed.

Having just changed my main thermostat and it been a ball ache, i now need to refill the rad with water and coolant. Im just wondering how much coolant i need to put back in !! Anyone know ? thankyou please ! P.s, Glad that job is over and why put the 4th bolt where you cant reach it is beyond me

I`v been looking around for a set of rear celis lights for my 540 with ambers and i`v found these on German ebay, my car is a late 99 model with LCM 3, so according to netmgr i should be able to code them to the car.

so i got oil in the bottom of the spark plug wells on cylinders 2,3 and 4. i had the rocker gasket done about 10k ago in sept last year by the stealership. now ive phoned them up about it and they said to drop it in, is there anything else that it could be? they said something about maybe my cam cover being warped? just trying to prepare myself incase they try fob me off with some bullshit....

Hi all

Not unrelated to my previous post about removing the seat backs - the reason I was wondering about doing that is because I found that the electric adjustment doesn't work on the front passenger seat of my recently acquired E39 and was considering swapping the seats over. When I tried putting a fuse in, I discovered why the old fuse had been taken out - it immediately fused. Thus there is a short somewhere.

Does anyone have experience of fixing this?

Well the 35d has been to the dealers once again, this time it was for a starter motor, battery and 2 parking sensors. The service chap rang up what the bill would have been if it were a chargeable job, result £843.00 plus 7 hours labour. So say £1,400 bill averted?

So looking back, the following been done under AUC:
- Rear suspension compressor and pipes
- Pano roof rails
- whole front end painted
- Discs and pads
- Exhaust sensors
- Rust bubbles on hatch area
- Reprogrammed I-drive
- Starter motor
- Battery
- Parking sensors
- Rear hatch switch
I don't want to add this up as I think it equals a Friday 4.30pm car! (or a demanding owner wanting perfection)

So is this the longest list so far?

Aero pack spoiler question

I have a aero pack spoiler fitted now as it was on the new boot lid i fitted.Found the wireing and connected it up with a lead that patches into the 3rd brake light under the parcel shelf and found no problems with the lcm as the brake light is led.The thing is when i turn the ignition on the led light in the spoiler flashes 10 time's at first we thought it my be just a one off but it does it all the time and always 10 flashes question is do they do this or have i got a big problem ????
Here it is fitted starting too like it so may leave it on

My sterling grey 5er has black grilles - see pic. I like chrome (coz i'm old!) and i dont quite understand why people are getting black grilles in need to be rid of chrome. Hi there,
New to the forum and recently bought a 2001 525d estate auto to ferry the dog around. What a fantastic car, and really pleased with my first BMW.
I have noticed that the car doesn't get up to temperature at all and the first thing I wish to replace is the thermostat.
I ordered one from GSF using my reg number and had a huge piece of black plastic arrive! I cannot find the thermostat housing etc that looks anything like the part I ordered.
If anyone can point me in the right area in the engine and provide any link to its replacement I'd be very grateful. I have tried googling it but no luck.

Allright folks as you may know i was looking for a e39 5 series its a 2.0i se model i have found and bought one guess how much for

Its got a full bmw service history up untill 2009 and from then its been serviced by other companies ... The car has 79 thousand on the clock and the car is immaculate but has some problems just now ...

Problems:-
Driverside front window regulator has went
Radio cuts out after 30 seconds ( anyone know why this could be?)
It has wood interior( will be wrapped soon)
And the indicators dont show on the dash but they work outside and thats all the problems the car has apart from being a bit sluggish so il service it and have a look at whats happening with it for now anyway i will upload pics as soon as im back on the laptop my iphone wont let me upload pictures

Sheared a gearbox pan bolt! Help!

Why it it when you're heading on a long journey you break something the day before?

Was tightening a bolt holding the auto transmission pan on. One of 6, and it sheared off. Shite.

I realise I'm going to have to replace it but how high pressure is the gearbox fluid? I.e will 5 very tight bolts of six hold the transmission fluid in? Concerned as a 200 mile trip beckons tomorrow!!

Hi All,
Last weekend I replaced the rear struts on my car. As some of you will know, this involves having to remove the rear interior including the rear speaker pods to gain access to the strut top mounts.

Now this all went to plan with the help of this forum! (thanks guys). Now though, I dont appear to have any sound coming from my Stereo!!!!! So, I removed the rear interior again to see if maybe I had forgotten to re-connect the rear speakers, but alas, no! I persumed maybe they were in some sort of closed system and if one was disconnected then maybe they would all not work!!!!

The radio/cassette (BMW Business) CD multi in boot, all seem to be doing exactly as they are supposed to, just with no sound?????????

Any help would be great.

Very frequently while gentle/moderate acceleration in M2, at about 2000 or 2500 rpm there is a hesitation, the revs dip a 100rpm or so before picking up and carrying on as normal. This does not appear to happen in other gears or when acceleration is, ummm, spirited. Would this be something to do with the twin turbos or something else?

The idrive screen keeps going on and off randomly, and sometimes goes very dark and goes of.. or comes back. I'm guessing it's either a screen fault or is it a dodgy power supply connector to the screen, as all the function still work (radio, bluetooth, satnav etc..)..

Any ideas, or start getting quotes for replacement screens.. ?

Hi All,
this seems an emotive and confusing topic from what I have read elsewhere, so hoping someone can give me the answer.

I have a 520d 07 Auto with 4x RFT's

They are OK but reckon within 6 months a couple will need replacing so the question I am asking is :-

Do I HAVE to replace with RFT's or can I swap to normal rubber tyres with no issues ?

Will I need to have the computer/suspension etc re-done or am I just better of leaving as is, but do notice the ride on the RFT's is quite hard (not unbearable but noticeable).

Probably opening a can of worms here but am bowing to those with more knowledge than me...

Within the iDrive of my 2007 E61 550i I was able to set the distribution for the heated seats, i.e more heat to my back than my rear end. I've had the car less than a week, but not seen a setting in the idrive to do this... is it possible?

Just replaced my front tyres this morning as were on limit with Vredestien Ultracc Sessantas non run flats. However on walking oout picked up a brouchure from said tyre manufacture and they do the above tyre in a run flat format.

Has anyone tried these? Would be interesting to see if they is much difference between the two formats.

But fitter said these tyres are being replaced with the new sportrac 5, but these are better!!

why does no one make caliper adapters for BMW?

Its a big thing in the VW/Audi community to have Porsche calipers on their cars.
Despite an extensive search I cannot find anyone that makes a caliper adapter for the E39 or BMW really

I hate with a passion the cast iron calipers that BMW seem to love so much, that just rot away!

Anyone have a suggestion of how to get a decent looking caliper without going for the silly money BBK?

I know I could powder coat them but after ive bought new ones to replace my corroded ones and painted them the costs mount up

I have recently replaced all the mid-range speakers in my car to logic 7 ones and also added logic 7 tweeters.
Now I want to add an amp to properly power them.

There are 4 sets of speakers, each set is made of 1 x midrange and 1 x tweeter connected in parallel.
Each speaker is rated 40w and 4 ohms, the resistance being 2 ohms for the pair (one channel)

I am trying to work out what power the amp needs for each of the 4 channels.
Will it need 40w + 40w = 80w RMS per channel @ 2 ohms?
Or 40w RMS for each channel @ 2 oms?

I'd appreciate it if any audio experts can chip in.

My father in law got 530i sport in which he has got MK3 sat Nav System, He recently bought a cd to upgrade his sat nav system he followed all the instructions as per on the cd, result CD is stuck now in the System, we can gear it running inside but nothing happens on the screen it's all blue withou GPS option...!!!
I tried to reset by disconnection the battery but still no luck....
I took my MK4 system out from my car connected to his car everything works fine seems like the problem is in his MK3 system.

What can be done now

Any suggestions??

My car has, since almost new, had a somewhat strange behavioural issue when trying to drive off in the morning. 7/10 morning starts seem to be weird. This only happens first start in the day.

I start the engine, engage D, Handbrake down, and the car will not lurch forward at all. Now I know for a fact that the handbrake isn't sticking because the car will roll forwards or backward if on even a gentle incline. I press the accelerator, and the revs rise but no forward motion for about 2-5 secs, then gradually the car starts to move forward and within 1 meter or so all is well again.

It feels likes clutch slip though there is no shuddering, noise or anything like that from the gearbox. It's like some sort of "pressure" has been lost. It used to do it 1/10, but it is gradually getting worse.

I'm no expert on auto boxes, but does anyone know what this could be? I'm think gearbox oil low, pressure leak in Torque converter etc. It's doesn't feel like an electronics issue, because it sorts itself out gradually as I press the throttle/over a few seconds.

I did get the dealership to look at this when it was under warranty, but but they couldn't replicate it all. Typical....

The car only has 32k on it, FSH etc, LCI Auto 2007 '57 and garaged over night. Other than this it is what I would call as close to perfect mechanically as any car could be....

I use Auto Glym wheel cleaner and was wondering if I could use this to clean the exhaust tail pipes or is that not a good idea with the chemical compostion of teh auto glym.

Has anyone used any household cleaners to clean the pipes???????

My 520 likes to gargle its oil and is pretty lumpy at the moment. I've got a few options - either have the head off and replace valve stem seals etc, or simply (!) drop a different motor in there.

I know of a 2.8 motor which is possibly for sale, just wondering how easy a swap that is. My car is a manual and I want to keep it that way. Will I be able to use the existing box/diff or will an upgrade be required?

Hello everyone I am looking for some friendly advice!
I have aquired an e39 540i and am trying to save it from scrap yard! I would like to run it as my toy and on a limited mileage policy.

I fall outside classic policy as it isn't quite 15years old. Insured my 200sx as my 3rd car by flux past few years but 540 quote was way off!!

Have tried the forum insurance broker and I wasnt ideal for their under writers. tried a few specialist companies but struggling.

I am 29 and have full no claims on my daily. But only 1 years available to use on this extra policy.

Anyone in a similar place?

Hello, looking for good honest advice please. Starter motor goosed and needs replacing, left it too long and typically now I need to rely on the car it needs replacing urgently.

If I go out and buy a starter motor tomorrow, can I fit it by myself on my driveway with regular tools and no special equipment including ramps or stands?

Or would I be better off getting this done at a mechanic or someone off the board who can do this in their sleep? If so, any recommendations who can fit this for me on Saturday or Sunday? I'm in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire.

My front control arm bushes as totally fucked on the left side. So im thinking while im there replace all the fronts inc drop links ect as if i just replace the bush im shure the ball joint will be on its way out. then get a 4 wheel alignment. or should i bite the bullet and get the rear done aswell at the same time and save the hassle a few years down the line of doing the rears aswell?

Now obviously this is gonna hit the pocket hard so i really dont wanna spend too much money but I always think do it once and do it well.

What would you do or even better what would jesus do?

I used to Downhill Mountain Bike when I was in school, and knew most that needed to be known.....and it's near enough all now.

I'm 5'11'' & have a 32" inside leg, which seems to suggest I need an 18" frame?! from there I'm dead in the water and need help....

what size rim & tyre combo should I be looking to buy? (I'm 14st currently but in season can creap to just under 16st) I'll be on the road/pavement 99% of the time, but the odd occassion I'll be doing the length of our coast which is like a loose stone along the cliffs and smooth tarmac along the front....
Do I need full suspension or hard tail or hybrid?

disc brakes are a must.....other than that (and sourcing a nice big comfy seat) suggest away....

hi all, i have a 2000 528i with the diamond shaped key that wont remote lock. The key use to work fine up although sometimes it wouldn't respond once or twice but it still unlocks the car and opens the boot. I tried the re-sync procedure but that's not working either - it doesn't sync! lol im pretty sure im doing it right, any one had the same experience?

Hi,

Ordered my F11 on 16th April through a large UK lease company as my next company car.

On 30th April I contacted them as I wanted to a very slight amendment to the order (different steering wheel). They checked but I was told it wasn't possible as the car was 'fixed in production'. What does this mean? Does it mean it was being produced or about to be produced or was being produced 2 weeks down the line?

The reason I ask is because the lease company aren't being very helpful advising when the car should be delivered and I am trying to work out when the car was made from the 'fixed in production' comment made on 30th April. Car then needs to be delivered to the UK.

Like a t**t I decided to have a poke around under my drivers seat before attempting my seat install (eventually) at the weekend and for some reason I thougt it would be agood idea to disconnect the wiring to see if my new loom would connect and yes....you guessed it.....air bag light on the dash is now on

Steering Lock Rebuild

My 1996 E34 recently had the steering lock break. On rebuilding it I have found extreme difficulty in replacing the split ring / snap ring on the steering column. As the column has to be fully extended against the spring I then need to fit the ring into the exposed groove. Has anyone tried and succeeded this. The rest of the job is very easy. Thanks

Now a simple question or is it.

I will be replacing the slave cylinder on my clutch on the E34

I will at the same time replace the fluid in its entirety. My question is do I go for DOT 4 or is it worth using DOT 5 while I am at it and would see a improvement worth the extra costs.

allright folks ive had a quick search about the internet and forums about a bmw 523i ...
however my search didnt turn anything up
and i would prefer to ask people who have possibly owned bmw 523i's and find out some stuff about them
such as
whats a good milage to buy one at and whats the highest you would go for one with ?
i dont wanna buy a car with 200,000 miles because im picky and also i would imagine problems would come with a car with 200,000 ?
what are the main problems of the car and how strong are the petrol engines in general and is it better to buy one with high milage and a full bmw service history or a car with no service history but a lower milage ?
i dont drive my cars hard so it wont be getting drove about like a lewis hamilton going to the shops lol...
if not to go for a 523i what one would you reccomend ?
i kind of wanna save money and not have to fork out mega bucks for repairs and stuff like that ? anyone any hints or tips as to what to do
im entirely open to other engines aslong as i dont have to move to the petrol station permanantley and also im only 23 and dont wanna be spending hundreds of pounds on petrol at a time
if possible i would like a diesel or a 2.0 litre engine anyone know about these ?
oh and it doesnt matter if its an automatic either
and also if i get a pre facelift e39 will i need to code the lights if i wanna change it to projectors and angel eyes and the facelift rear lights ?

First one spotted was the E39 LMB ** HNA Eastbound on the M4 first spotted at around Junction 12 and he followed until he turned off for Bracknell approx 9.30 this morning

Looked it up on DVLA and that says it was first registered on 1/8/05 - Must be one of the very last to be registered !!!

2nd one was a Silver/blue E61 first spotted coming up to the Chiswick roundabout and then spotted about 15 minutes later as he let me out on to Glenthorne road in Hammersmith ** EGO

Suspension top mount question - can someone explain?

Just looking at buying a lowering kit for my E34 and the description says:

front top mount with M14 thread and 80mm cap required (not included).

What does that mean to me? My car's a 1994 (narrow grille) 520i with M50TUB20 engine and auto box. I'm fairly certain it has no M-tec or sport suspension as standard.

If my car doesn't already have the required top mount, can one be fitted? Or are they not compatible? This suspension kit is listed as 520i-535i so it should be ok...

central locking - sticky solenoid?

A couple of times I have noticed on locking the car, the rear driver's side lock does not lock, equally on unlocking the car this same door occasionally does not unlock. So far it has always managed to work on the second attempt, and it seems that once it is freed off it will happily lock/unlock every time. Seems to make no difference whether I use the remote or the key in the door.

So I was supsecting it was just resistance to the door locking/unlocking mech somewhere. So far I've taken the door card off to see if there's anything obvious, however I bottled out of unbolting the airbag so I saw nothing. I did try manually resisting the solenoid by preventing the button from moving and it takes a lot of force to stop the button from moving. I take from this that either there is in fact a serious intermittent resistance somewhere in the mech, or that there is an electrical issue, ie no signal is reaching the solenoid on the odd occasion (when the locks have not been used for a while, maybe a damp connector somewhere?).

I've also noticed that, even when the door does lock or unlock it operates very slightly later, ie there is loud click of 3 door locks moving, and then another click, slighly later of the problem door lock operating. This has always been the case in my ownership (I think), but it has only just started properly sticking. This symptom leans me towards a mechanical sticking rather than an electrical issue.

Can I unbolt the airbag, ie if I leave the electrics connected and just unbolt it do I risk it going off at all?
Is there any downside of undoing the -ve on the battery? (radio codes, alarms resetting, etc.)
What should I be using the lube the solenoid and locking mech?

I've done a search, and found a couple of threads, so I'm obviously not alone with this, but I couldn't find any solutions/ fixes.

It's been a while since I've been in here and it's been even longer since Christine was on the road...

Anyway, she's all MOT'd, taxed, etc and purring along nicely now, but the speedo has stopped working. Am I right in thinking the Si board batteries are dead and playing havoc?

I presume I just need to whip out the Si board and remove the batteries (seeing as she gets a service every year, despite the low miles she does) ?

When driving at times the clutch pedal remains close to the floor.  But if you put your foot under the pedal and lift the pedal then all is fine for a while.

Checked fluid level did lose a little  but not enough to be doing this

I have guessed it's the slave but seeking confirmation.  Hoping it's a cheep alternative.

Well I'm home from Brighton for the (very long) upcoming weekend and have fallen back in love with my car all over again

Whilst down there I met a lad with a mapped E60, what an incredible car, and I have to say I did hit Autotrader as soon as I got back to my room, however, looking at what I'd have to pay to get one, I soon realised it was a big NO at the moment.

Anyway, drove home about 340 miles today, covered it in under 6 hours including two stops at service stations, at peak I was showing an average of 34.8mpg(!) and finally ended up on 32mpg as I hammered her for the last hour or so.

Long story short, after making the drive I realised I don't actually want to spend money on a newer car, the tiptronic box was still dropping her smoothly into third gear and allowing me to blast out into the outside lane on demand, comfort seats are great, and my stealth audio upgrade packs a nice punch

Now once I get the bloody wobble under braking sorted she'll be perfect considering she has 151K on her.

No point to my thread, just wanted to spread some love

installed and working but unfortunetly bringin up error on both parking lights on idrive

whenyou start car up brings up fault but when turn lights on, faults goes away

i couldnt be bothered with the hassle of these errors and faults

iv contacted seller looking full refund

anyways anyone ou there got error free 4x e60 501 LED's installed in there headlights
in there e60 from 04-07 and no issues with errors at all from reputable seller

My pass. side dipped beam front glass cover/lens has a stone chip crack in the front.

I can't imagine anybody will want to break a good condition headlight for the glass part, so, where can I buy a replacement from?

Also, how is this removed? Do you simply pop the chrome surround off to release the glass?

I have tried to search for the answer to the following question without success.

I currently have 172M wheels (32mm offset rear)on my car with 15mm spacers on the rear to bring rear down to ET17 so wheels look nice. I am currently bidding for a used set of 166 M5 alloys with rear offset of 28mm. I know lots of people put 10-12mm spacers on when putting on M5 offset wheels to bring offset down to near M6 offset for a better look.

My question is will I be able to keep my existing 15mm spacers which will bring the ET28 M5 166 alloys down to ET13 without rubbing. Seems expensive to buy 12mm spacers when I've already got a good set of 15mm.

Just though I would give you an insight some pieces of work that I feel have mae a difference for the better.  As most of you may recall from my project thread I had my battery been relocated to the boot using all M5 stuff.  well I just wanted to give you an insight into how its working out.  Well I have to say the steering is now so light - makes a huge difference to the driving of the car.  Definetly something everyone should consider ....

Also I ordered brand new black head lining for the car http://shop.bmw-classic.de  I must get some pix up but very impressed

Finally, I fitted a big bore throttle body.  Now I dont believe it has given any extra power but the throttle repsonse is waaaaay better.  Very hard to describe the benefit. You really need to do a before and after drive to notice the difference.

Whats the going rate of these cars today? Not too bothered about SE, Sport, Manual or Automatic. Rough guide on prices and anyone's experience with these engines.

My head says buy a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi but my heart says E39 530d Touring.... quite fond of the E39. I would like a Honda Civic Type R but I think I'd rather buy a cheaper car and have cash for repairs.

Any input from members would be much appreciated.

If so, what wheel and tyre combination did you have? I'm thinking of buying a set of 16" turbines and some part worn winter tyres now, while they are reasonably priced.

Normally, I think the tyre size on these is 225 55 16. Should winter tyres be this size also, or should I be looking for something narrower like a 205 60 16 or a 215 60 16?

A Kia Rio Diesel with a 6 speed box.

This little car looks great outside and in, and it's very well equipped - Electric windows all round, electric mirrors, automatic climate control, heated seats, Radio/CD (plays MP3 files) with Aux in and USB, Bluetooth,  twin 12v sockets in the front, leather steering wheel, Steering wheel controls for stereo, trip computer, phone, cruise control (!!) etc, dark tinted rear windows and all sorts of cool displays everywhere, with very comprehensive instrumentation.

Externally, the 17" alloys (they look bigger) finish it off nicely.

So - what's it like to drive?  Well, I'm used to bigger cars like this, and I had been driving the 318i just before I picked this car up yesterday so my view might be slanted - but I thought it was horrible to drive.

Steering is so light that I wasn't convinced it was actually connected to the wheels.  Taking off in first gear was jerky, doing so in second was never going to work.  It was peppy enough in the first four gears, but the other two weren't much good other than for cruising.  In all aspects other than when the car is stationary, the car lacks refinement - lots of road, engine and wind noise, not helped by those massive (for a car this size) tyres.  Although the interior is very well equipped, most things are operated using toggle switches - which work well enough, but contrast with the car's otherwise modern appearance.

As I said though, I'm used to bigger cars built in Sweden and Germany, and so it may not be entirely fair to be so down on this little car, which I suppose will be competing in the Fiesta / Focus class (both of which I have driven and would prefer) - but I'm looking forward to handing it back on Friday, and picking up my somewhat less well equipped 2003 530i.

Don't know if everyone is aware, (if I'm banging an old drum then I apologise), but in the last budget HMG slipped in a small increase in fuel duty of 3p per litre, which comes into effect on 1st August. I love the fact they gave it 5 months between announcing and enforcing, presumably so we'd all forget about it!

Anyway, that 3p per litre is subject to VAT @ 20% which means when it comes into effect we will be paying an additional 16p per gallon for fuel, putting us amongst the most expensive fuel costs in Europe!

The Government claim this is needed to help pay the debts the previous government racked up, what they don't take into account is the massive impact this is going to have on everyone's daily lives. Small firms WILL go out of business, food and fuel costs WILL go up, every one of us WILL be impacted by this increase even if we only use our cars once a week!

So, by virtue of the fact we're all on this forum as fully paid-up petrol heads can I please urge everyone to sign the FairFuel UK petition. http://www.fairfueluk.com/

Better still, the FairFuel campaign have an opportunity to lobby against this iniquitous stealth tax later this week and there is a link on the site to enable you to e-mail your own MP.

The only way anything will happen is if the public kick up a big enough stink, do nothing and you will have no right to complain after the event!

A Head

The son is just a head!  But the dad loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love and compassion.

After 18 years, the son is now old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar, tearfully tells the son he is proud of him and orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy.

With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the barman shaking his head in disbelief, the boy takes his first sip of alcohol.

Swoosh!  Plop!  A torso pops out!

The bar is dead silent; then bursts into whoops of joy.

Broken Undertray

Walking back to the car yesterday I noticed something hanging down under the front bumper. After having a look I found I've got a fairly big hole in the undertray - great!

It's split sort of behind the hole and I guess driving on the motorway is ramming air in and forced it to hang down - so something else to fix.

Does anyone know how much an undertray is from a stealer. I need to know if I need to sell a kidney to pay for it!!! There's a few on eBay but they all see to be different shapes. The one I want is immediately behind the front bumper.

Is it easy to fit? I'm wondering if I can do it myself? I would need to get the car on the ramps; it would be the first time I've used them for years!

I've got to drive from Torquay to Norfolk next weekend so I need to get it sorted.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

No Power to starter after water in rear footwell

Ok where do i start....

A while back i had a dodgy heater matrix which managed to leak a ton of water in to my rear drivers foot well... the car then shorted out everything on the dash conked out and the car lost power immediately.
i Left it a month or 2 to dry out.
I recharged the battery put it in and everything lights up fine.
When i turn the key to start the car there is nothing.
No click not a sound. in the engine bay it sounds silent.
I checked the battery safety device on the + terminal seems intact.
Removed the drivers seat and carpet and had a look at the fuses(still have to test them)
No blown fuses in the glove box or fuse compartment in the engine bay.

im lost dunno what to do, starter just wont make a sound.
Up until the leak it started fine and as soon as the battery shorted out it wont make a sound.

Is there anyone out there who knows of a fuse or relay or switch or anything i could check in order to overcome this?

any help would be appreciated

Hi guys! First thank you for letting me join your excellent forum, I am certain I'll be here for a long time.

My friend has offered me his car. I wasn't sure until I drove it, fallen in love with it really.

Its a 52 plate BMW 5 series E39 530i sport, its also the mtech model. Its done 128k, full bmw service history and its an auto. There is a few scuffs on the bodywork here and there, but generally its immaculate.

So apart from it not being brilliant on juice, is there anything I should be aware of that is prone to failure and potentially ruining me financially?

Just thought I would introduce myself my name is Owen and I am clearly mad.

A few weeks ago I purchased a 1999 540i for £400, not only was it over-heating but the auto gearbox is very sick. Coupled with poor paintwork electrical problems, water ingress, bald rear 265/35/18's. Need I go on!!!!
Simply put I am the middle man between last owner and the 540 becoming a 3 foot cube!

I have been reading this forum day and night for many weeks finding some fantastic technical information.

I hope to share my knowledge and gain much more. I have a history with *cough* modified Japanese vehicles.

Hi all, been reading this forum with great interest over recent months. I currently have a 1984 628csi manual, but i think I now have "the bug" and am looking for a m535i manual. Id really like to get hold of an e12 but these seem to be very thin on the ground (only got about £2k max to spend) needing work is not an issue so anything will be considered. So an e28 it probably will be. Any leads on potential cars for sale will be much appreciated.

I've just been looking through the spec sheet of my car and it says it came with the 15 inch cross spokes.

This surprised me, I thought all later 540's came with the 16 inch starfish type. The spec sheet for my silver car says 16's.

I know early 540's came fitted with 15's, just thought that they were phased out.

e28 525e now converted to manual gearbox, yippee.

Hi Folks,

So at last I have my perfect e28 - my lovely 525e is now a manual!

Many many thanks go to Sir Anthony/730eye for doing a superb conversion for me, a top guy who went above and beyond the call of duty - I know at times it was troublesome but what a result!

Now with 5 speed Getrag 260 I have proper control, no more guessing "Will it change won't it?". Why BMW UK never wanted this car here I don't understand or at least why they didn't bring this car into the country as a manual originally. Complete with masses of torque low down, it pulls from 1000rpm no worries and with no infamous transmission growl either.

I've deliberately kept the car as standard except for the gearbox, keeping it on a classic car Agreed Value insurance policy and hopefully making the most of the car's economy. I'm not expecting more in mpg terms though because it's too tempting and entertaining using the 'box, the first measure has given me 32.5mpg over 346 miles.

The only disadvantage I can find? Not so easy now to drink a McD's Thickshake in stop start traffic...a minor sacrifice.

The next step - how can I make my 525e sound like an e21 323i? No boy racer loud cans just a bit more noise please? Any suggestions?

Oh, and I've got a set of 15" BBS cross spokes with polished rims to go on shortly.

The cut off date for registering is 14 June, after this penalties will be higher for those caught.
HMRC are targeting people who trade regularly & don't declare the income.
Apparently they will be utilising Bots to trawl Ebay & Amazon etc.
A couple of thoughts about it.
Will it hit Ebay as people may think it not worth while if they have to pay tax as well as fees?

Bought this e28 about a month ago to replace our one we have had for 22 years ,sadly its a bit too far gone on the rust side of things ,just chasing it ,my father owned a bw franchise back in the 70s 80s and 90s and this car happened to be one we sold new ,plus looking over the car its very solid with only a few minor bits needing doing ,deal was done and it came home,plan is to make an m5 looker using all the good bits off the other car (white one ) few pics to show progress ,i will do a more detailed thread later ,lucky i kept all the original dealer logo and plate equipment

Long story short, due to pick up a shiny brand spanking new 520d this Friday.

Dealer had a stock vehicle that more or less matched the spec, misses said colour was important!

Here's the issue, according to the BMW web site, when checking phone compatibility, entered vin number, surprise, year of manufacture is 2011. Which I guess means it's been parked in a field for 6 months plus. It'll be a 12 plate, but is a 2011 car.

Not impressed. Any suggestions, please???

Looking into buying one. It needs and ecu as original has fried. Also lower arm needed and a spring. Without asking too many questions to the seller will the ecu be easy to fit and get coded, also will I need new keys etc. it's a bargain of a price at £300 and I may get him lower as he wants it gone.

DIY PAS fluid change - has anyone done it?

I sometimes get the occasional groan from the PAS pump so I think a fluid change is in order as the level seems ok.

What's the best way of doing it on an E34? I saw an E36/E46 guide on the internet once but it basically said to run new fluid into the old fluid, which seems an expensive waste of fresh stuff to me.

Would it be a case of removing hydraulic lines from the steering box and just letting it run out etc? What's the best way?

Wet Lap Syndrome

Before I put this on the "to try and get the dealer to fix it" list, have just done a 2,000 mile trip, much of it in the rain, and noticed that when I open the rear left door the seat gets its own little shower. This happens after the car has been driven or parked up in the rain. It looks like the outer door seal is flush against the paintwork but can't see where else it could come in. All the other doors are fine but any passanger sitting in then rear left seat is going to get a very wet lap.

After 9,000 miles and 12 months the to fix list is:

Smelly AC (getting gradually worse again after cleaning, no fault found by dealer)

DAB cutting out for a second after every few minutes (NO SIGNAL on display, does it in London, round M25 and every other Mway I use)

Above wet lap issue.

Apart from that, loving the car!! Just got to get these fixed, for warranty work will probably not use the Inverness dealer any more as as soon as you go in with a problem you get the riot act read to you that you'll be paying unless you are lucky enough that they find the problem. Anyone any experience of Coopers in Cobham?

This car looks like an absolute corker.114000 miles, black leather interior, electric seats, Nav / TV, newly refurbed staggered 18" BBS LM reps, full and comprehensive service history, Radiator, water pump, expansion tank, alternator and ABS module all recently replaced, new Bosch battery, Parrot bluetooth setup with iPod connection etc etc.

It was my intention to buy this car at or near its asking price of £3250 before I came across the other one. If I'd known the seller was going to reduce it to £2250 yesterday, I'd be on the way to get it, but I've already paid a deposit on the other one now. I've spoken to the owner, and he's a very nice, helpful chap who has recently bought another 3.0L BMW.

INPA and M57 Engine

As per title, anyone use INPA with the M57 DDE option

If so:-

Do you get any warning messages
Which version of INPA?
Which version of EDIABAS?

I'm using something like 5.01 INPA and get a "possible mismatch" (orsomething similar) message when loading the M57 option. Goes on to load Ok, but never happy ignoring a message like this.
Not got cable - or car !!! - handy right now so can't give exact message/version.

I will probably have some stored errors following my EGR delete test the other day.

FYI - the EGR delete (plug the vacuum hose) was fine for the first two short journeys, but on the 3rd journey I got a warning light.
I reversed the mod, and for the next two journeys the light stayed on, but on the third it went off!!

But I'm guessing there will be stored codes to clear.

Bluetooth using existing radio system

I was wondering if it is possible to get a bluetooth hands free kit for my mobile, that will work using the cars speaker system?

I have a V reg 530D with the sat nav/tv/radio 4:3 display.

I don't need it to do anything fancy - I just want to get in to the car and if I get a call answer it and hear it over the radio system?

Obviously i know I'd have to fit some form of microphone for it but is there such a beast that will intergrate with the BMW's system

I have a little telephone button on the tv screen console but I don't know what that does - nothing apparently - well not that I can see.

I've had my E39 540i auto now for a few weeks. It's a fantastic fresh example with only 3 owners. Anyway, after towing my caravan (please don't mock me!!) this weekend I found the transmission held on to 3rd gear for an excessively long time i.e well over 20 miles on the motorway. On towing home I tried to tow in Sports. This helped for the first 40 miles, then as soon as I hit a hill the car dropped to 3rd and stayed there for the next 20 or so mile until I pulled off the motorway. Even then the transmission to an age to change up the gears??

I had problems when I bought the car with a "shudder" when I pulled away along with "surging" at low speed. I had the transmission fluid changed along with filter and this cured the problems. although I do get a harsh change down from 2nd to 1st gear now and then?

I thinking possibly over heated transmission?

Hi guys am new to the e39 scene, i am sure at some point i will ask what to you gurus will call a silly question. But i will ask as i genuinely do not know.

I just moved on from e30s, and two weekends ago i got myself a 2002 530i sport in titansilver. There is a few things i would like to do to the car to keep me busy, but will be done in stages.

I want to start with the diff, i am led to belive that the 530i sport auto has a 3.46. Does anyone have a list of differentials that came on the e39s? i was offerd a 3.64 from a 523i (which would make a lil difference to acceleration) but i am not sure if this will fit my 530i, and also is there any no higher than 3.64 available on the e39s?

so my lsd aint locking up as well as it used to. had new oil in about 3 or 4 months ago and it was sweet then. now its kinda meh. spoke to dealers today about getting a quote on geting it serviced and explained the symptoms, they said it would cost me 90 quid to look at it to find out whats wrong and then 90p/h after that. they then said they didnt know how long it would take as they aint done one before they aint menna tell customers that are they?! doesnt inspire much confidence. so now im looking for alternatives... would i be best off just puttin a new one in there? or would i be able to rebuild it myself for less than 150ish? the seal/gasket kit is around 80ish from the dealers, plus 30 for oil. now wouldnt i need to get new clutch plates or something like that? i understand what an lsd does but how it does it is witchcraft to me.
has anyone done this before. can anyone provide any insight? would i be best off just binning it and dropping a new one in?

Rear shock/spring options

I had the car up in the air at the weekend to investigate a rattle at the rear end, which turned out to be the handbrake cable guide had come loose so was easily fixed. However, while I was looking I noticed the lower spring platform on the left rear shock was slightly bent downwards on one side. The spring is in once piece and the platform isn't cracked and I don't know how long it's been like this but I don't like the look of it. The car has optional M-Techic suspension from new so fitting a used SE shock isn't an option. At 170k the springs and shocks are probably well past their best anyway even though they aren't leaking. What are the options for replacements? I would like to retain the current ride height but cost is also a factor. Any recommendations?

Had a game of fuel station chicken last night and this morning. Two miles from home last night the trip said 0 miles left . This morning was aiming for a cheap garage on the way to work , and managed another 38 miles on the fumes. It took 69.95 litres of Asda's finest diesel, so assuming there's about 2 litres in the filler pipe I reckon I could have gone another 24 miles before the phone call for help. Anyone else been brave of foolish enough to find out exactly how much the tank holds?

Hi all

Have just become the owner of a 1999 530D. Goto Ebay and then 'Completed Listings' and then search under 1999 BMW 530D SE M TECH MANUAL FSH 4 MOTHS TAX 5 MONTHS MOT NO RESERVE if curious.

First problem -my present car is a 1996 528i manual which I now have to get rid of. I have just looked at the price for changing over the insurance and it's gone UP by £150-200 with everything else the same.....but it's a diesel ffs!

Anyone else have this experience? If so, what did you do to get the premium down?

540i power steering pipes.

Hi

Has anyone replaced the V8 power steering pipes to/from the reservoir as per the diagram below:

I previously ordered from Costwold: 32411095515 and 32 41 1 094 277 which are meant to be number 1 and number 15.

However, looking at the current pipes top down in the engine bay, the top pipe (number 15) doesn't connect to the reservoir and goes down maybe to the power steering pump - not like it is in the diagram.

Any ideas?

Been using the e28 a bit lately and this brings up my usual gripes about steering boxes but also got me thinking about brakes.

I have e34 3.6 M5 discs and calipers front and rear, braided hoses an e32 750 master cylinder and good fluid, its also had a brake bomb in my ownership and an adjustment of the x-linkage.

driving today i'm reminded of my soft pedal feel - the brakes are all there and a pre-emptive dab on track prior to full application gives consistent and excellent retardation.

Its been bled many times as i'd always felt the pedal to long/ soft. ie just not sharp.

Today it occured to me that perhaps it isn't the hydraulic aspect but the bomb (though i believe its a hard pedal and this is a new BMW part not too old) or the servo assistance thing behind - whats the symptoms of this going west.

Strange tax disc holder?

Just took this out of my car as its a bit old and replaced it with a normal magnetic holder. The tax disc holder seems to have a cable coming out of it that goes under the glove box then into the depths of the dash?

Also noticed a little toggle switch and push button, hidden under the dash near the diagnostic plug. definatley an aftermarket install.

Any ideas on these what the wired up tax disc holder and switches are for?

Hi all

Have had a warning light on now for sometime, but not overdue, saying brake pads need changing. Had a look at them tonight but seem like there is still a bit left on them. Should I change them or wait until the sensor warning comes on? Can anyone recommend a descent set of pads to go with the original discs as these have hardly any wear on them, or are bmw's good enough? Is this an easy job to do myself? Any special tools needed for this job?

I`v been giving some thought to the wheels on the 540 and come to the conclusion that i`d like to swop my 17" style 5`s and replace them with 18"M para`s for winter use, so does anyone want to do a swop or part ex ?
my wheels will need refurbishing but they are in good general shape with no chunks missing and only a slight kerbing rash, but the paint is lifting on all the wheels though not terrible i`ll post some pics later.

I would also like to find a set of 19" staggered LM`s, but probably reps seeing as genuines are so expensive.

Long story short my 5 series has been sat on my driveway for a while since owning another car. Since then the battery has gone flat. Now I cant get into the car. I've tried opening with the key at both the drivers door and the boot with no success. So it's now basically a garden ornament. Does anyone have any idea of how to get into the car (short of breaking the window to release the bonnet catch).

Just took the e60 out for some heavy oil (not been driven for over a month) as its going on the bay next week and got what sounded like sticky pads so drove a few yard to see if it would clear and it never so got out to have a butchers and the spring had snapped and was cutting the tyre on the inside anyway I obly had 4 pot springs for an e60 does anyone have one in there possession?

After the recent demise of my E39T (MOT failure-terminal sill rust) I was on the lookout for a replacement PDQ. As luck would have it this 530 came up on Ebay & was just around the corner from us! I won the auction with a bid of £675 so pretty happy with that result!

It's a 1995 Oxford Green 530iA Touring with Light Silver Grey interior,cruise,auto-dim mirror & 186,500 miles on. The bodywork is a little tired in places with a few rust spots & dings here and there (one largish dent just below the O/S rear light) but mechanically it is in very good order along with a nearly new set of Continental tyres (the previous owner worked for a tyre & exhaust place!) & lots of recent suspension work with OEM parts. The interior was really grubby but I've managed to get it up to a reasonable standard although it actually looks better in the pics than it really is!

Not looking to do a lot other than more tidying up & hoping to get loads of trouble free miles out of it!

Well, after a weeks ownership I have a problem with the 540i Sport (E39). Came to the car this morning and there was a big pool of water/fluid underneath. Checked the expanision tank and it was empty. Iv topped the tank up this morning and will see how it goes.

The guy I bought the car off in Stevenage said its recently had a new radiator, water pump and thermostat. I emailed the BMW specialist and they confirmed it has been done although I have no receipts for this.

Not a happy chappy at the minute. Can anyone advise what may be the problem? Leaking hose im thinking or could it be something more serious??

I bow to all your knowledge of E39s. I have a 2000 model 523i se auto. 124k

The car is using maybe a litre of coolant every week, the bottle is usually nearly empty everytime I check it. I've checked all the pipes and can find no leaks, The bottom engine cover has been removed to see if any water is dripping from somewhere else. No pools of water found there either. I have had it sniff tested and nothing there either.

The car is returning around 29mpg which is about right, doesn't run rough. Although I have noticed it does take a while to get to temperature. The temp needle takes maybe 15-20 miles to get to the straight position.

It did dump a load of coolant out a few weeks ago, although as I had driven about 100 miles or so I couldn't work out where the coolant had leaked from.

This is my second E39 the other one used some water but no where near the amount this one does.

Does any one have any ideas please! ??

Hi guys, my names Toby from Walton on Thames. Bought myself an E39 530d sport the other day and joined this forum for help and guidance with it. This is my forth BMW, have had 3 E36s before and I keep coming back to the roundel. The car is a 51 plater, manual arctic sliver M sport with 122k on the clock and it is by far the finest car I have ever driven. My mind is easily changed most of the time but this one is a definate keeper. Has near enough full history with an oil change a few weeks before I got her. Has an Alpine head unit with bluetooth, iPod connectivity and USB, just need to get an adaptor for the radio and a surround. Not the best spec compared for some but enough toys to keep me entertained. Plans are to fix the niggly bits and enjoy her, maybe an exhuast, remap and some M parallels. Nowt extreme just nice and OEM

Only got iPhone pictures but will add some more when I get a chance.

This was my old baby that I sold over a year ago and still miss

Not to everybodies taste but I loved her.

Service Light Countdown

I've had the car about six months now, got it with three green service lights on. I've done about 6k and I've just gone to one green light. Obviously I don't know how far through the 3rd light interval it was when I got it, but I think I got just short of 4k on light 2.

So I should have at least another 2k left before the last green goes off.

My question is, what actually happens (if anything!) when the light goes orange and then red?
Does it automatically go into any sort of limp-home mode for example?

I have no intention of not servicing it of course, but I am due a long trip to Cornwall this week and the last thing I want to happen is limp home to Yorkshire at 30mph !!

No doubt someone will come back and say service it before the trip, but this kind of defeats the object of the service light countdown. I will of course do a pre-flight check on all fluids, tyre pressures etc (in about 15 minutes actually!)

FYI, previous service history shows it going about 15k between service inspections, based on this the next one is due in about 7k. Also based on this I had an oil change done about 2k ago for peace of mind.

Oh, and seeing how easy the EGR delete mod is to do, I'm going to do that inCornwalland compare the trip there and the trip back for performance.

E60 30D M SPORT WONT START

My 530D wont start! Ive had a problem with battery for a while ive put jump leads on and everything powers up and the car turns over and sounds healthy enough but wont start? no matter how long i leave the jump leads attached the small glass circle on the battery stays black? green means charged! black means dead ! and yellow means replace! mine is always black no matter how much i leave the jump leads attached? could the battery be the problem even though the car turns over? any help would be gratefully recieved.

It I buy an E39, no matter which of the ones I have on my shortlist I choose, I will have some cash left over to do whatever bits need doing, and still some left for contingency. But - it will be a car that is 2 generations old, with little trade in value in 3 years.

I could buy an E60, with everything I want, or very close, but it will cost me ALL of my budget - if anything needs doing, there won't be any funds left over to get it done.

OR

I could buy another Saab 9-5 Aero - which would be a 56 or 07 plate car, with all the toys.

hi all, got told this week that my e39 528i head gasket has blown and it is more cost effective to have a new engine fitted.The cost to fit the engine is £200 plus what i get an engine for,anyway when they change the engine do the take all my ancillaries from my engine and transfer them to the new one and will and engine from an automatic car be ok on a manual

Conversion from a 750i done by JML Motorsport, LHD and located in Germany so posted for interest only presumably unless some E34 lover on here really wants this. Has anyone else done this conversion to a RHD car?

German google translation reads as follows:

- Sunroof does not open
- Stainless rear left wheel well and trunk area (see pictures)
- Bumper, front parking bumps and some cracks
- Wishbone front
- fenders front left Nachlack (painted not so good)

Door edges and filler cap area if no rust.

Otherwise, the normal signs of wear time brings.

The vehicle is fully roadworthy, but is currently logged into the garage.

Having lost my spare wheel well to the LPG tank, I've been trying to find a space saver spare wheel which will sit in the boot most of the time.  I struggled to find a BMW space saver with a 74.1mm center bore, most of them are 72.6mm.
One option is to buy a BMW E46 one and mill out the centre bore to 74.1mm (sounds like a bit of a ball ache).
However, the bigger Jags (XJ6 etc) use a 74.1mm centre bore and the PCD is 120.6mm, instead of 120mm required for all BMWs.  My man maths calculated that each hole for the wheel bolts would be about 0.3mm too widely space - almost bugger all.
The Jag space saver arrived yesterday (£25 delivered) and it fits perfectly.  It is an 18 inch wheel with a 115 85 18 tyre and easily clears the 530i brake calipers.

Computer consumption display on LPG

My 1997 E39 528i has a Micromise LPG conversion which works well, when cruising on LPG @ 60mph the computer display shows 32 mpg, (from previous tests, the LPG consumption is about 27mpg). When switched to petrol the display still shows 32 mpg, why does the computer display the consumption for petrol when LPG is being used?

E39 M5 buyers advice

I have a friend who wants to buy an e39 M5. I own an e39 530d that's done 160k miles so I'm familiar with what wears/needs replacing on e39s and how it expensive it can all add up to be (e.g. all suspension arms/bushes).

We have a couple of options. (A) a 110k mile car with BMW history for £7k or (B )a 175k mile car with good history pwned by enthusiasts for £5k. Option B means we'd be left with £2k in case of any servicing/repairs required.

Both cars are condition-wise identical, good bodywork, no rust, no current mechanical faults.

So basically the question is, is 50k less miles worth £2k?

Hi All,

My new pride & joy is a 2000 E39 528i. I've fixed the broken climate control buttons, cleaned the leather, fixed the parking sensor system, removed the tow bar, replaced a brake pad sensor and got the CD changer working again (CD sounds much better than MP3). Finally, I found a cassette from the '80s to justify the tape player.

The only thing left is the air con system which doesn't blow cold. Now, I live in South Wales, so we only get about 30 minutes of sunshine a year but I'd still like the car to be fully functional - it's just the way I am. I've trawled the web and found all sorts of help but now I'm on stop.

Firstly I tried re-charging (with a kit from Halfords) but it won't charge past the very beginning of the green area on the dial and it's still only blowing hot so I investigated further.

I've never seen the aux fan turning although it spins freely so it's not seized, I can't locate the connector for the fan to put a meter across it or give it a direct power supply, or even to find out if the connector's defective...any tips?

I can't hear the compressor 'clicking' when activated but the belt driven part starts and stops as the air con is switched on and off...does that mean the compressor's OK?

Most significantly (maybe) fuse 75 - the 50-amp monster under the glove box, is open circuit and a new fuse blew after a few seconds of being fitted (engine off, no keys in the ignition)...is this an indication that the FSR is faulty?

The FSR itself - what an adventure! I'm still not entirely sure where it should be as there are lots of helpful american posts where left is right. My best guess was under the steering wheel towards the centre of the vehicle. I found something but I'm not sure that it is the FSR and if it is, I can't imagine how to get the actual component out. I've attached a photo of the plug that I managed to remove hoping that it's of some help with ID of the component.

I'm totally realistic about my abilities and if I need to get the air con fixed by a pro then I will, but if I can isolate the cause then I'm keen to fix the problem myself.

Any help appreciated greatly.

M20 rough idle

Hi guys.

My 1990 m20 engined 525i auto has a rough idle. It's pretty low mileage (90k) with full BMW history and is in excellent condition. Sometimes the idle is rough and sometimes smooth ish. Never as smooth as my other straight sixes though.

Idle is always dead straight at 700rpm or so, it's very smooth and pulls like a train. I've run two cans of bg44k injection cleaner through which has improved tractability but idle is still rough. Sometimes it's better and sometimes rough which is odd, it's not always one thing or the other. It's as if petrol builds in one cylinder and then fires giving a bit more of a bang.

I've cleaned the airflow filter (no maf on this one), cleaned the throttle body and cleaned the idle control valve all of which were clean anyway. According to my mechanic no error codes were thrown up when the idle was first rough and the car had an inspection 2.

Idle is dead steady, so I guess the idle control valve is fine. fuel pump would only show up at full belt when it would starve the engine of fuel, so guess that's fine although it's a bit noisy like they can be?

I therefore guess it's either injection related and an injector, or god forbid a compression problem, although inside the engine is clean as a whistle and valve clearances are fine so i guess not (all plugs are fine with a light white coating so i guess this means no valve issues?) I've sprayed the inlet manifolds with carb cleaner and no change to engine note so that's fine, all hoses are without cracks or leaks.

So now I'm stumped and revert to greater brains than mine. It's odd that it can vary sometimes between being quite smooth and after me cleaning all the pipes, idle control valve and airflow meter it's bloody worse!

I should add plugs all seem fine with even white coating, I've cleaned the crap off the distributor contacts and rotor arm too. Perhaps replace distributor cap anyway as the contacts are now a bit lower down after cleaning off the carbon?

What do we think? Help!

Just driving home this afternoon when i noticed my indicator tell tales werent working along with my high beam indicator. I cant hear any clicking when indicating either. All the lights work outside though and i havnt noticed anything else not working.

Morning all, introducing myself and my recent purchase 2008 525d se Touring.

It's a high mileage ex-company car with 109k and has the auto gearbox. It will be my daily driver and also purchased to tow my race car.

This is an imported Honda Integra DC5 which I'm competing in a new (second season) BARC series called the Honda VTEC Challenge.

This is my second BMW and my previous car was a 330d M Sport Touring which I really liked. I'm impressed with the new car and getting 36.6 mpg at the moment.

Just picked up a wheel bearing from ECP and noticed that on the us m5 forum someone mentioned how the M5 bearings have ridges that come out to hold the disk's.. (see the pic below) is that the same over here?

i know its not a BMW or 5er but i picked the up replacement for the M5 today, and i am smiling like a kid in a sweet shop. the car is a proper hooligan on my way back from york i pulled up at a junction and a lovely Honda NSX pulled up behind me, shame as there was a free lane next to me, i couldn't resist pulling away properly then all of a sudden his is on my arse, i move over he pulls level, gives a nod then fucks off into the distance, nice start to my ownership

a few details, its a 2005 '54' plate Honda Civic Type R, 72k, cosmic grey, air con and thats about the only options you get on these i only got home at 8ish so it needs a clean, but some pics as that's i want to see in journals

I may be buying an E39 with one of these engines, and it will have between 85k and 115k on the clock. I know about the need to make sure they don't overheat, but what other problems potentially kill them, and what's the best way to prevent them?

I'm planning to run the car for 3 years / 36000 miles. Apart from regular servicing, what do I need to do? Are these engines generally good for 140k +?

My lovely M5 went this afternoon. I am leaving the country next month and have had it on auto trader for a week or so. Whilst i was paying to become a ' Gold Member ' so i could list it on here, someone rang and gave me asking price!

I will be driving 4x4's where i am going so there won't be much call for an M5.

I hope to have another one when the work/ conditions are right. I must say i enjoyed every minute of ownership and i was genuinely sad to see it go.

My e39 went this afternoon. Sorry to see it go but no choice really.
Ad went live on autotrader 6pm last night. I had 6 calls last night and one of them was a Polish couple from Norwich. They texted me this morning to say they were on the way and turned up at 1pm checked it out and bought it. I took another 5 calls today for people wanting to come down and see it. Surprised me considering the leak but not complaining.

I'd stated the diesel leak in the ad and I took a few bits off the car to sell separately and got a grand for it.

Very happy with that and so is the new owner.

Anyway thanks to everyone who has helped me on here and made this the best 5 series resource out there.

Howdy,

So I am driving along, then step on the brakes and they feel spongy and my foot hits the floor! Manage to limp home using a combo of engine braking and stomps on the pedal. Luckily I was near home and on 30mph roads.

Check it is not the master or slave cylinder by:

Engine off pump pedal, and see if it drops slowly. It does but hardly noticeable.
Pump pedal, Engine on, pedal drops.

So this ruled out the cylinders.

I turned the Engine off, pumped the brakes and looked under the car. It is pissing out brake fluid!

Popped the bonnet, and looked about and saw that the rubber hose exiting the ads unit nearest the Engine has a small bubbling hole!

(Not my pic BTW)

So, question is is it easy to replace, and I am guessing that everything inc the abs unit will need a purge and bleed

Finally, what are these called? Every time I search for Brake Hoses, they are for the rear wheels, not the ABS unit.

Ta!

Good morning,

Since I bought my 2001 530i Sport Auto back in November 2011 i've been slightly nervous about the 5HP19 transmission. It was on 93k miles when I got it (now 114k). Shortly after purchasing, I had a friend of mine (who runs an auto transmission service shop) do the oil/filter. He also added some additive to it. He states the box looked in good condition (it wasn't a full strip-down) and that there wasn't much 'junk' build-up (I assume around the filter).

These symptoms have always been present, but I think they're getting worse, but that could be paranoia taking over :-

- Under full throttle it looks like either the torque converter or gearbox is slipping at around 4500pm (peak torque for the engine most likely?). The car accelerates but for a couple of seconds the engine speed does not increase with wheel speed, and then it continues.

- It's a lot harsher changing gear when cold (could be normal)

- First gear has a bit of a whine to it

- When slowing down almost to a standstill and then accelerating again (like in traffic) it's quite harsh engaging the gear/tc again

- Changing from 2nd to 3rd is quite harsh

After reading various posts on this forum about gearbox woes, it sounds as if perhaps the valve body and torque converter clutch/solenoid may need looking at. Of course these are just wild guesses and noone will know until they have the box apart. I don't really want to fork out £1800 for a replacement box (quote from my mate).

Any thoughts from the experts appreciated..

First, thank you Jimmy, who as ever, came up trumps.

He showed me how to fit the wing and his guidance was invaluable. He also happened to have a wing in the same colour he let me have for an almost non existent amount of sherbet tokens.

If you know where all the bolts are it is an easy fit.

Front bumper of my Feersum Endjinn straight off. Left it on the wires and pipes as there was plenty of space. Wheel arch liner out (left the wheel on). Wing off. Wing on, wheel arch liner on. Bumper on. Cup of tea.

Got wet though. Started to rain about 10 minutes after I started the job. But I persevered.

And the new one on.

Whole thing done in 58 minutes...

After programming the LCM tonight i came across this fault code in the DME it cleared and came back, after starting the car and letting it warm for a while it cleared and did not come back.

Could anybody shed any light on the situation?

After getting my car mapped by simon last week before he write the map he did check the injectors and number 6 was quite high he told me but went down a little bit once a bit warmer, now following this on the glow plugs were removed recently when the turbo was replaced to make sure the engine would crank over, but number 6 would not move, so could this be where the problem lies with the glow plug not the injector?

Since changing my discs and pads I'm getting a slight vibration through the brake pedal when braking at over 40 mph, in addition a nasty sounding clonk from the o/s front when going over raised bumps etc.. There appears to a bit of movement from the thrust arm when I tug at the wheel from 12-6 o'clock.

Would I be right in thinking this is most likely worn thrust arm bushes? The arms are certainly original's and I doubt the bushes have been changed by the previous owner.

I'm guessing it makes sense to just replace the whole arm with bush and balljoint already fitted, can't work out if it's a straightforward job or not from the online guides?
Was hoping it's just a case of unbolting the bush and carrier end and popping the balljoint, then replace with new?

Starting to get a bit disheartened now, only had the car 4 months and it seems it's one problem after another My fault I suppose for being so ocd about it all being right.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Pre-LCI 525i mpg and oil consumption

Last weekend our 93K miles '54 plate 525i returned 40.3 mpg on the first 215 mile leg of a 553 mile round trip, taking-in M1/M42/M40, Harrogate to Abingdon, and then back via the Cotswolds.

Overall mpg for the journey fell to 36.2 due to an hour's hold up on the MI.

The car had done 65K motorway miles in its first 3 years when I bought it with FBMWSH, but since then its annual mileage is only 6-7K, with a change of 0-40W Mobil 1 each year and no topping-up necessary in between.

Similarly, the 72K miles M52TU B28 engine in our "face-lift" 2.8 Z3 Roadster doesn't require any topping-up with Mobil 1 in between 5K annual oil changes.

Long may they continue in this manner!

Right,

I removed my original Pioneer head unit earlier to fit a spare CD player head unit I have.

Suprise suprise, a previous owner has taken a self taught, five minute 'crash' course in DIY automotive wiring.  As you can imagine, the original loom is nothing short of 'butchered'.  Oh goody.

So, can anyone help me identify the following BMW wire colours please so I can fit a new ISO lead:

Red/yellow

Red/brown

Blue/purple

Blue/grey

Yellow/blue

Yellow/grey

Blue/brown

Blue/red

I'm sure the above are all speaker wires, but there's enough for eight speakers and all of them are connected - but my car only has six speakers I believe??  Two on dash, two in foot wells, two on parcel shelf.  The following I THINK are power/ground/remote etc:

Brown

Red/white

White

Purple

If anyone can give me some definitive answers that would be smashing.  Also an explanation as to why I have eight speaker wires but only six speakers.

Alright, so this is about as cheeky as it gets.

My E39 530i Sport handles like a barge. You get to choose from understeer, bad understeer or chronic understeer. Even with the thicker bar on the back it's still pretty awful (stiffer than the OEM M5 one). I know what class of vehicle it is and I am not expecting miracles... BUT..

I wonder just how different the E39 M5 is? So many people say they handle well.. but then lots of people think my car handles well..

I am curious to find out. I am basically on the ponce here to have a drive of someone's M5.

Anyone up for it?

p.s.: yes, this is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek post but if anyone would like to take me up on this I would be quite serious about it..

Hi Folks,

I picked up my E39 M5 from East Sussex and drove it up to Holyhead for the ferry home.  Traffic was hell until Oxford because of the rush hour traffic, and the wipers were going for the whole trip - but I didn't care!!

The car is such a pleasure to drive! So smooth, so balanced, so sure footed even in the wet and windy roads of North Wales.  Playing safe I set the limiter for 90 and the first time I could try accelerating was the slip road onto the M23.  Wow - so easy - 90 came up in the blink of an eye.

The weather being crappy and me getting tired, I didn't try out the full beans in sport mode until I got to the toll booth on the motorway north of Dublin.  WOW - what music and what acceleration - absolutely stunning! I think me and this car are going to be good friends.

I need to re-register my car in UK, and the form needs an engine number filling in.
From what I have read, this is stamped somewhere low down on the block for the M57 - is it possible to see this without getting the car on a ramp?

Hi

I have a June 01 M5 with widescreen TV, mark IV dvd nav, M-audio DSP thing, and CD changer. Everything works fine.

I've already installed an Intravee2 (which now includes RichardP's mod to wake up ipod's from hibernation - thank you again) but also want a 3.5mm connection up front.

I'm going down the route of cutting the tape connections from the back of the headunit and adding phono connectors. From other posts, I understand the input signal is low, so want to install a Line Driver to boost the input from 3.5mm to avoid having to crank up the volume on the head unit each time I enter "tape" mode to activate the 3.5mm.

A simple install I thought, but I'm having difficulty trying to locate a purple with red stripe wire on pin 11 on the blue plug (should be ignition switched power), which I need for the line driver. I don't have one! I can match all other wires from the posts I'm following, but my blue plug is missing this wire.

It's not on the white nav plug either.

All the wiring diagrams I've managed to find online suggest I should have something there, but I don't.

I also can't find a definitive answer on where to get an ignition switched power feed from in the space. I can't see any other purple with red stripe wires in the dash space (assuming this colouring convention is used)

Anyone got any pointers or ideas please?

New to this forum so i started a thread in the noob section but thought this would be the place to talk about my BMW.

Bought a 535d sport 5 weeks ago. Have had the swirl flaps removed and blanking plugs put in. All done by PMW in essex. http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/

Also had it re-mappeed last week using an evolotuions map http://www.evolutionchips.co.uk/Car_and_Van_Remapping_Search.asp

Differecne was noticeable straight away and once the map had bedded in so to speak the power was even greater. MPG has also improved to the tune of 15% or so. for a car that weighs nearly 2 tons and runs on tractor fuel they really are quite quick. I'm used to a 480bhp sierra cosworth so not much really feels fast to me these days but this is so comfortable and effortless. Love it

I know mine will look like any other 535d sport with 19's on but apprently i have a pretty decent spec? The only thing i can see that is missing is headlight washers lol.

Took me ages to find a good one and i had to go from Wallington in Surrey to Leicester to pick her up but it was worth it being a 1 owner, fsh 535d sport with 57k on the clock. Paid 12k for it which i thought was very reasonable. 06 Plate. Push button start model.

Just bought my first reg 'A6 RXN' (my name is pronounced Airon) when I told my 'best mate' (pronouced Arron) about going to get 'A9 RXN' or possibly 'A8 RXN' he went and bought both inside of an hour that b"£$%!d and put them on his a3 quattro and f430 spider. livid aint the word.

but the only other options (which i've been trying 3 years now) was A9 RON which is on a clapped old vectra/cavilier in my town - i offered the guy, sorry 'Ron' £1500 for the plate and he refused, i try to sell him the idea of buying a nice new car with the money but he said it's going to die with him LOL
or
A4 RON which last sold for £20k....sod that.

ANYWAY.... my question.... the plates being kept on retention until i buy the e60....can i assign the plate at the same time as sending in the paperwork for new keeper? and does it add a previous owner when i take the plate off?

Ive decided after reading a couple of items that im going to attempt a car pc.

Im a gadget sorta guy, my previous car had screens, surround sound and games console in.

This time, after finding out this cable....

...ive decided that it should be easy enough. Only thing being that the stock sat nav screen isnt touch screen, but i can work around that; also this is probably a messy way, ideal way would be to completely overhaul it all for a touch screen unit up front, stereo sound and Centrafuse software.

Anywho. here is the plan;

above cable
laptop with external USB hard drive fitted and screen removed.
Car invertor - to power the laptop
VGA to RCA connector to connect screen to AV cable
Phono to RCA connector to connect laptop sound to AV cable
Bluetooth keyboard and touchpad
Internet tethering over mobile phone
USB hub and extended iphone/ipod cable into glove box or just an input cable for sound input.
GPS through reciever not that i need it. But you can get it to work with Google Mapping so may come in usefull.

Cant think of anything else to add, so many different things I could have. May have 2 bluetooth controllers to play games or something dont know yet.

One downfall would be audio as the cable only has MONO input.

I did actually post a couple of years ago when I got my first E39 (99T, 528iSE Black)....99k and a great car that is still going strong but has to go. It has a few annoying things wrong with it that I simply do not have the time to do.

I found my new one in a local garage and picked her up tonight (02, 530i Sport) - 64k Full Main dealer history and serviced every year/5k. The old girl was and is nice but...this new one feels like a new car. Amazing !

I never did get my wheels refurbished so planning to keep them and try to find someone to polish them for me or sell them separately.

Ever since i bought the car a few months ago ive become more aware of an incosistent problem..
the car is an auto as mentioned..

Heres the scenario..

Driving along fine...Red light approaches..Slow car down to idle..Still in drive..Break fully pressed..
The car will occasionaly 'JUDDER' thats the only way i can put it. a lil dip in the revs..and a judder..sometimes worse than others..sometimes a week with nothing.Then sometimes at every light or time i stop..

As far as ive noticed..doesnt happen if i take car out or drive and sitting at idle in neutral..

Just when in gear and break fully pressed..and this is well after its come down in gears .

any ideas? Common?

Any help would be appreciated guys..

Looking for a nice, late E39 to buy and use as a daily driver for at least the next three years.  Needs to be petrol, automatic, and with plenty of history, with some evidence of a bit of cash having been spent recently.

I'm thinking 530i, but would certainly not rule out the 525i - or maybe even a 535i.  My priorities are :

A late car, 2003 or 2004
Petrol engine 2.5L upwards
Long MOT - tax enough to get me home at least
Automatic gearbox
Under 100k miles, but will consider very well maintained cars a bit above that
Good mechanicals, well serviced and with preventative maintenance carried out
Rust free as possible,  I live in a place where the roads are salted a lot of the time
A decent metallic colour, or solid black, or Imola red
Black leather interior, or if not, black dash and door tops at least
Decent looking BMW alloys - Style 66 are fine, M Parallels better, max 18" - not into aftermarket wheels on these. Decent tyres.
A few decent options would be nice, not hung up on things like SatNav or TV particularly though, as they'll be out of date anyway - I'd prefer practical things like a sunroof, or electric memory seats or heated ones.

Me being me, I do tend to worry about stuff like the cooling system on these, and maybe gearbox oil changes, and plenty of other things, and because of this I will want to get the car 100% as soon as I get it, which brings me nicely to my budget.  The less I have to spend sorting the car, the happier I will be to pay good money for it.  I won't pay top end cash for an average car though.

The only other thing is that I have to be able to get to you by plane or train from Inverness - shouldn't be too difficult!

Hello all,

My e39, a 530d Touring Auto, has a strange problem when it gets up to temperature (temp gauge in the middle).

Firstly it gives a warning about coolant level (level is fine and good grade of coolant).

More alarmingly when coming off the throttle it seems to go into natural and then reselect gear. Going back on the throttle clears the problem and it pulls as normal.

This only happens when the car is up to temperature. Turning the heater on inside the car makes the temperature drop to about a quarter and also clears the problem when the car is restarted......

I have a video I will post of the problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Have not checked fault codes yet, waiting on cable to come.

E/Mirrors gone haywire

My drivers side Mirror is being a total f*ck.

drove to the top of my road, and the sideways motor is going constantly. I cant stop it, and it wont stop until the innermost side has moved right in. If I push it back out it just moves back in again. Altering the position of the selector switch does nothing, whereas putting the joystick the opposite way simply "pauses" it.

Any ideas gents?

I have for some time intended to strip down and service the motor/mechanisms, but havent really a clue how to dismantle the outer shells without breaking them. anyone got any thoughts?

ideally need to sort it before I drive to the ace on saturday as I cant see jack sh*t in it.....

Picture the scene....two lane one way street. Pull up at lights in the offside lane, look in mirror to see an X5 approach the lights in the near side lane & stop level with me.

No big deal.....but it's personal reg is only a couple of numbers away from mine. One of those moments when you wonder....do you wave at a total stranger that obviously has the same initials, do you keep eyes front as if you never noticed??

Has speed camera alerts, perspective view, and other bits and bobs I cant remember. Also changes the colour of the menus a little and looks a little better.

1 downside is that it turns the dash screen french if speed camera alerts are turned off.

If anyone would like to borrow to update, let me know and ill post it over to you. Would like it back mind.

If you want to make a copy, you need to have a dual layer CD burner. Not sure on the rest as you have to make it bootable from the car, so i have no idea on that.

My E60 is pre-facelift and standard EU audio, 6 speakers no amp.
Recently I have replaced all 4 midranges with Logic 7 midranges and also aded Logic 7 tweeters to the front doors/rear shelf.
The sound is soo much clearer and the treble is actually present now.

One small issue is that now, the bass is pretty much gone.
I know the underseat subs are wired in parallel to the front door midranges and the standard door speakers are more "bassy".

I'm not looking for something to blow your brains but more on the lines of 2 x Earthquakes, under the seats (instead of my 6.5" factory) and a 2 channel amp.
Anyone can recomment a decent 2x150w RMS 4ohm 2 channel amp? Like http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/mrp-f300 perhaps @ 2x150w RMS?
Or the gain would be too insignificant to justify the price?
Could I just tap into current sub cables for the amp inputs or would I need to get it from the back of the head unit?

You need pop-ups enabled on your browser

Go here first

Click the link in the middle of the page 'Electronic Parts Catalogue' and you will be presented with a Login Page: -

It then opens another new page and you select the start link under the WebETK section (self evident) and on the next new page you need to put the last 7 characters from your VIN in the top box and press the button to the right with the >> in it.

On the next page you will see the technical designation of the vehicle and in the top bar click on options and it will give you a printable list of the options for your vehicle.

Dear all,

My halogen angel eyes transplant is almost complete. I've polished one lense using the 3m cleaning kit and am not particularly happy with the result. The lense is many times better than it was, but nonetheless not perfect. I think this may be down in some ways to my inexperience with using the kit but either way, I'll tackle the other headlight next weekend. Will upload a picture of the polished lense in a sec.

In the meantime, I'm going to do my best to aim the headlights properly, but wanted to check something before I start. Whilst stripping the headlights down to replace the adjusters, I noticed an interesting 'latch' part that could be moved left and right. It appears to attach in some way to the reflector assembly but wanted to check with the group as to what this part was and which way it should be set before I do the aiming. Here's a picture:

The part in question is the grey metal right angle latch visible through the aperture on the top of the headlamp assembly. Any ideas?

E39 530D to E39 M5? Move or Improve?

Hey chaps, I have owned my 530d auto now for just over a year, and it has to be said it is without doubt the best all round car I have ever owned. My problem comes in that it is a great daily car, but I have the hankering for an LSD & V8!

Now the ONLY thing putting me off changing is really the fuel economey issue, I drive an 80 mile round trip for work every day, almost all of which is motorway. The 530d is doing about 37-39Mpg, and I am thinking that the M5 will be doing low 20's? The other thing I never thought I would grow to love is the auto box, such a good tool for commuting.

I suppose my main question would be is an M5 going to be wasted on mainly commuting, with the occasional hoon thrown in? Is it worth the cost to change & extra fuel costs, or should I spend the money on remapping the 530d & possibly fitting an LSD?

Your thoughts please?

e39 530i Oil leak...

Evening all,

I've got a '51 plate 530i (facelift with the m54 engine) and it has developed an oil leak. It will shortly be going off to my trusted mechanic, but thought given the collective experiences of the members on here, there might be some expectation as to what it would be?

Also, this car is fairly low mileage (70k) and the previous owner drove it sparingly. I'm guessing short journeys and light footed driving (the wife of the previous owner mainly drove it, don't think she ever put her foot down in it) means I'm a likely candidate for a blocked/gunged up CCV? If so (and how do I tell?), replace with the same again?

As ever, any thoughts very much appreciated

Avus E34 540/6 Touring restoration

Another month, another punt on a rough E34. This one needs quite a lot of work doing to it and is going to take some time. It's an individual model and i'm fairly sure that it is the only RHD 540/6 Touring that was built in this colour.

I wasn't looking to buy anothe car after just buying a 95 E34 M5 but then this came up on ebay and I couldn't resist. It's high on miles with 196k on the clocks and it's had a fairly hard life by the looks of things. Here's a few pictures to tell the story.

This shot shows a really faded bonnet

The strip down starts to assess the damage. The car appears do have been in an accident early on in its life and there is evidence of repair in the right corner of this shot.

How bad is this rot! Another throwback to the accident, i'll be looking for replacement sills for both sides. I kept on digging at the sills and more kept on flaking off. Not pretty at all!

Another reminder to take your sideskirts of every now and then, the horrors that lurk underneath are sobering.

All clear behind the front wings. They are being replaced with the ones off the M5(someone is buying the M5 shell and doesn't need the wings or bonnet)

Passenger side sill, not as bad as the drivers side but still needs replacing. The car appears to be from Portsmouth and the salty air looks to have got to them.

Here's the M5 that is giving up a few parts to help the touring. The sills are amazingly solid on it! I was thinking of putting a V8 in it but I was contacted by someone who needed to reshell his M5 so this car will live on as BMW intended. I'll be using the wings, bonnet, bumpers, sideskirts and wheels for the touring.

Here is the touring with the panels from the M5 fitted, the long transformation has begun.

Havent got the 1.5 mill for the bat mobile......

Last Wednesday I finally got the chance to pick up my new motor.

Over the last 7 years I’ve always had some form of BMW and with my work introducing a new 'green' scheme it was time to change cars.

Having looked through all the options I settled on a new F30 318d SE in Luxury spec. I wasn't too bothered about specing it up as after two years the cars going back and the luxury package had all the things I wanted.

Anyway, after 600 miles in a week it's averaging 50 mpg and on the way to work today i managed 64.2mpg over the 9 mile drive. I miss the 535d's power but i certainly don't miss filling it up.

So enough excuses as to why I went for a 3 and an 18d here she is.

Just a quick heads up. A guy on another forum I frequent recently had his house broken into in early morning and the theives we're looking for the keys for his E60 M5. However the point that caught my attention is that someone else commented saying that some thieves don't even need the keys to steal the newer BMW's with the fob that inserts in the steering column. Apparently all they need is a laptop and a key emulator lead from eBay (coupled with the right knowledge) and bingo. Apparently the same guy who posted this info said some tw4ts nicked his nephews M6 off his driveway by simply smashing the window and plugging in a laptop. Took less than 2 mins in all.

My 2002 530i sport has just failed its MOT with an incomplete rear OS spring. I have looked on Euro Car Parts and they list Sachs rears, but they seem to be a generic spring for all 530i's obviously i need the same springs as i alread have, sports, with the correct ride hight etc.
I have also read that the dealer can determin what springs are fitted to your car via the vin number, is this right?

Or has anyone used the sachs ones for euro car parts?

Any advice would be great.

Also anyone replaced their springs, what kind of job is it ?

Hi,Guy's. i have had my v8 for 18 months now , and its due its MOT on Saturday..so I knew that the rear tyres were getting low on tread so I had a proper look ..laying down ..lol as I have mudflaps fitted ..
And they are both ( the rears) worn more on the inside edge with the passenger side more so and the metal is showing..i have jacked the rears up and checked the springs..both ok.. And tried to fell any play by moving ..or trying to move each wheel ..they both feel the same and no apparant play.
The car drives very well and I have not felt heard any clonks etc..
I have never has a wheel alignment done ..??
Any thoughts ??

Hi all,

I am picking my new car up on Friday/Saturday and cant wait.

On the test drive I was surprised just how clear and bassy the stereo was when the owner turned it on. I also noticed it had speakers in the rear door cards (only relatively small, say 10cm max.)

I have searched on here, and without the car infront of me, would these factors point towards Logic7? - A very welcome surprise if so! (it defo has Prof Nav and Auto everything else) - Apart from the monumentally cack manual, single zone climate control......

If you have any advice on what I should do first on a 40k mile, 56 plate 530d, I would massively appreciate it....(already had some great stuff on PH, but would welcome any more tips...)

Im a keen forum goer (Pistonheads etc) and just wanted to say hi following my recent purchase of a 530d MSport!

I have wanted a 5 for so damn long, and I'm like a kid in a sweetshop waiting to pick it up at the end of the week....

Spent ages looking, went for a slightly older pre-LCI car, which crucially was the 'right' car, both in terms of history and spec. Just trying to establish if it has the Logic7 stereo, which I think it does as it has speakers in the rear door cards and a surprising amount of bass (only on the test drive so didnt go nuts)

Looking forward to a few meets etc once I have consoled myself about the price of 275/30/19 tyres....

Particular the rears how much gap have you got between the rear arch n tyre?
Reason being is that my car is a sport on 19s but to me it looks silly at te back its well to high

I currently use a pro ride to carry my bike on the roof of my car (2005 E61) and this fits nicely next to my roof box when I am off camping. Problem is my camping stuff seems to be getting bigger and I may need to get a bigger roof box.

So - I am looking at getting a bike carrer for the rear of the car.

I don't have a tow bar fitted so would be looking at a boot mount.

Any suggestions?

Finally made my mind up to do this, fed up of trying to see my way by candle light I've got the self-leveling and washers already fitted so far as I'm aware it's legal......??

Now the request really, 4500K or 6000K? Personally I'm not a fan of the blue look you see on some so waswondering if anyone had any pictures of both options, be very helpful.

Anyway, plan on getting the kit form the link belwo and hopefully fitting weekend, just need to make my mind up what rating to go for.

Gearbox mount - not sure what it does?

Hi guys, as I was under the car replacing the engine mountings yesterday morning, I noticed what appears to be a large lump of metal with a rubber bit mated (well it was attached at some point in its life) to it, hanging off the rear of the gearbox - see pictures below:

Does anyone know what the hell this does - I couldn't work out what it's purpose was. More to the point - do I have to put a new one on?

As you may have recently heard, i hit a deer (well clipped it on the drivers side). The damage seems to be purely cosmetic.

Basically i was wondering if anyone has any of the following spare.

Drivers side halogen facelift headlamp with the standard yellow angel eyes and clear indicator lens.
I think the part number is 63126902520. (Hopefully someone who has upgraded to xenon headlamps has a spare lying about in the garage somehwere)

Driver side wing good condition in titian silver. Trim and indicator lens not needed part number 41358162134.

Hi, just been to see my fathers friend that has a e39 520 and he said it came up with the error saying his oil level sensor had died, so it's just done a oil change and replaced it with a OEM item...reset the codes with his OBD2 reader.....and it's came back - he's taken it out for a good run too.?!?!?!?

he's checked for continuity on the loom and it's all fine.....can you remove this from the check control completely?

Im on 94000 miles now and have seen some info on the Diesel filters being changed. Although the car has a great service history, ive nothing to say that any fuel filters have been changed. How many do we have in the 2001 E39 530d? Im aware of the one under the bonnet but there has been talk of one under the car.. (roughly under passenger seat). will the one in the tank need a swap too??

In addition, what precations will i need to cater for... re-bleeding the fuel through?

Is there a write up on this service type?

Im off for a 3 day trip to Luxembourg soon and want to make sure the Car is ready for the run!

Ok so its only 1/18th but it is a limited edition being number 59 of 2000.

Its an Otto Resin Model.

Allot of these were snapped up over on the M5 board but I manged to get one and with out paying the stupid money that some one has put a few on ebay for.

The detail is fantastic even down to having a satnav wide screen and staggered wheels. It's even the right colour

Hi all, upto 17000 miles now , but twice since I've had the car the OBC average mileage has reset it's self to 19.9 MPH!? Both times I have left it to see if the value rises but both times it stays at 19.9 . Another thing to add to the list for the dealer at the first service very soon. Anyone else had this happen?

Greets all

I 've just nabbed m'self a lovely two owner E39 touring 2001 plate with 110k genuines on the clock. The first owner was BMW UK (a senior exec) as she has all the toys including memory, heated & active seats, sat nav/phone with voice command, glass sunroof, steptronic auto etc. She is all bang on original (down the the factory inserted 2001 satnav CD!) with no fails/replacers since new (except consumables) - which might be a blessing or a curse (not sure which yet - guess I'll find out over the next 10k!). It's been very well maintained (full BMW/indy history) and totally unmolested - the one 60 y.o owner never had kids/dog in the back and is pretty fastidious from what I could tell of his house. In fact, the only fault I can pick up is the common pixel pox on the instrument matrix panel (which I will get addressed at some stage soon).

Im sending her to my local indy in Ipswich as lights are down to inspection 1 - I'll have him check her over for the usual suspects for a +100k miler.

But at least I know there is a wonderful forum where I can get help if stuck! Thank you to everyone who contributes and makes this such a brilliant & unique place!

Cars Parking Too Close - Did I Do The Right Thing?

Had to pick the kids up from school on Wednesday & when I got to my car, I noticed
that the car behind had kindly left me a 3'' gap.

The car in front didnt leave much more!

The cars where parked in a '1hr parking bay (im a permit holder) so potentially, I could
have had a 59min wait for the owners to return therefore making my school run impossible.

The car at the rear had a small terrier on the passenger seat & had left the drivers window
open enough for my arm to unlcok the car which I did allowing me to push the car back enough
to get out etc.

i went yesterday and saw some gorgious old cars and stood within 6 feet of the legend that is sir sterling moss! Anyway whilst stood next to the main straight i heard an almighty bang so turned to see an e type in the wall (furthest car in the picture) i took a couple of pictures then heard lots of tyre noise and into frame came one of the other cars sideways. Just as i got him in focus another car smashed into his broadside as i opened the shutter. Lucky shot for me just a shame about the fencing.

Reset both Cons1 & Cons2 before setting off on a 60 mile round trip and when i got home i checked the results. I have recently cleaned the MAF so im thinking this has helped.

Rather happy with that.

Considering the average was 29-30 before cleaning the MAF im hoping that this 40ish will continue. (depending upon my right foot of course)

Might not have to splash out for a new MAF now!

Just ordered a 520d msport f11, built last week and I'm confused about the 6 nr option for the Apps.
Does it now come standard and has to be activated by the dealers, or is it a factory oe fit?
Also, I saw it was raised a while ago about the 13 pin wiring not having the 12v fridge supply.has this been sorted or is the fridge going to defrost enroute!!
I did have this problem with my X5 but it was sorted by the dealers.
Ps anyone wanting a 10 year X5 with a few extras you've got two weeks....

On Friday I bought a 540ia Sport in sterling grey, black leather with the un-popular fake wood trim (myrtle). It came with 18inch M-parallels and had just shy of 112,000 miles on it. It's my 5th BMW (i quite like bimmers). I will try and get some pics soon depending on weather and how clean the car is. It is to be my daily drive. It appears to have been reasonably well looked after by the owner of the last 4 years. I wasn't certain about the colour and i'm still not. I originally wanted a blue 530i, grey leather and i wanted a manual (very little chance). My wife hates me 'wasting' money on cars so i had to find one that had been (or at least appeared to be) well maintained. I bought this one in a hurry. I hope it turns out to be a good buy.

Hi,

I have the standard stereo fitted to my 2008 e60 and the stereo is not that good, my old transit van seems better.

I have found that there are the speakers under the seats and as far as i can work out a speaker in each door.

is there any way of knowing if the car does have an amp fitted that can be upgraded ?

im not to keen on cutting into wires everywhere so a simple solution is what im after.

I have read lots of posts and get quite confused with all the options.

I only want to spend around 300 - 400 pounds and am not looking for top spec sounds or boom boom boom base,
just an improvement on the standard equipment i have

Whats the best way for a better system in the E39 without adding a sub? Components in the 4 doors all amped? It'll be JL Audio stuff i buy most likely.
Cant imagine a sub working well in a closed air boot.

I just had to buy it, its been sitting in a friends yard for 3 months, tyres going flat along with the battery.

It has full leather all the trimmings and is a 1998 R in silver. Its has a tasteful roof spoiler fitted along with a boot spoiler, has Lexus rear lights, Not nice!
It also has the 18" MV alloys (I think this is there correct name) with great rubber all round.

I Paid £200 but it's going to need a little TLC, new Cat required PRICE? and 1 suspension leg is lets say a little poorly, also it has a rusty rear boot.

So my questions are
1/ Price of Cat ?
2/ Price of suspension leg?
3/ What size is the engine, Im thinking 2.2 straight 6? But I'm sure the log said 1991cc? (It is a straight 6.)

Also what should I do, scrap it and sell the wheels, ebay it as is or do it up?

Any suggestions, opinions, etc welcome

I've found the perfect spec'd Nov 2011 525d, except for one thing, it's only got the standard sound system. I usually look for Logic 7, but I can't find one, seems to be very rare. How does the standard one fair compared to say the standard E60 sound system?

Any upgrades available, like the Alpine kit in the E90/92.

Im looking to a E60 530i with an LPG conversion as an alternative to a 525/530d. There not many E60's that are on LPG but are many E39's about on LPG so i thought i might get better response asking on this forum.

Firstly, are my calculations correct? I have calculated the following;

Around town - 21mpg on petrol at £1.39 a litre (or £6.31 a gallon) = 30p per mile, 17mpg on gas at £0.75 a litre (or £3.40 a gallon) = 20p per mile or the equivalent running cost of 31.5mpg around town.

On the motorway, it comes out at 37mpg on petrol = 17p per mile, very conservative and say you'll get 27mpg on gas that works out at 12.5p per mile, the equivalent running cost to 50mpg on petrol.

A few other general LPG questions;

I believe the car starts on petrol and then switches to LPG when it reaches the correct temperature. How long does it this take?
Reading various reviews on the internet, the car does not drive differently on LPG. Is this correct?
Is there anything else i need to worry about converting a BMW other than to go for a high quality system?

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's' cemetery in the back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before...... and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently I'm still lost....it's a man thing.

Hey there,

I discovered that while trying to squirt/clean the windscreen, the water from the reservoir was leaking all over the drive. Popping the bonnet revealed water coming from under the bonnet sound-proofing, so I peeled that back and found a split perished black pipe. The 'knuckle' is still attached to the passenger side end, but it all fell apart in my hands in the middle.

Is this a common failure?

Are these tubes sensibly priced from BMW, or do people tend to head to the motor factors?

my wife suffers from the above badly. she is genuinly in constant pain; i can vouch for this by all the whingeing and moaning she does. it has now got to the stage where i am worried about her and do feel for her. i am very rarely ill and a fortunate that i have no idea of what pin she is in. everyday chores forher are becoming increasingly harder and harder for her. simple things like, standing up ironing, vacuumin the house, and walkng the children to school (okay it is a 2 mile round trip for her, 4miles in total if she goes back up in the afternoon.) she is on constant medication from the doctor, and regularly receives physio to help with the pain.

someone has suggested to her about a diability living allowance. i have no idea about any benefits as i have never claimed and always worked. is this worth investiating or not? what would the advantages/disadvantages?

Help, I hit a deer

Hi Guys

I was driving back home on the A33 and a deer popped out from nowhere and i broke, but not enough unfortunatly, and it clipped the right side of my car.

Now the side right panel on top of the sport bumer has shifted up about 1cm and in at the front around 1cm.. The gap between the back of the headlight and panel has a bit of deer skin/blood. Bodywise only that front bit of the side panel seems affected.

Right headlights seems to work, but the indicator is messed up. When i signal right the indicator on the dash goes super fast, the back and the middle right ones work, just the front one doesnt seem to work. Do you think ill need a whole new right headlamp or just a bulb?

Finally i pulled over at a petrol station to check the damage, when i was driving off i got this weird wirring/screeching noise moving around in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. (reminds me of the noise my alternator made when it was on its last legs on my previous toyota). I havent heard it since, any ideas what it might be?

Appreciate any advice or ideas you guys may have

e39 Touring tailgate problem

Hello all,

The glass hatch on my touring has never opened since I have had the car. I always knew/suspected it was the wiring. Also my Touring has an auto close/open boot, there is a button to close it, it has also never worked.

Today I got around to inspecting the usual place where the wires break, the hinge on the tailgate/boot lid.

I found one badly joined wire (someone before me attempted to fix it. It was for the rear lights) and I also found one wire completely split - the wire for the glass hatch on the tailgate.

I have the wire leading to the tailgate in plain sight but the other end had disappeared into the roof of the car. It is not to be found.

Can I assess this wiring loom from one of the rear roof speaker voids?

Do I need to take the headlining down?

Any help would be great, car is sitting with its boot in bits.........

Seeing that my 39 has been dumped in the driveway looking sorry for itself waiting for its new turbo, i thought i would get on and give it a good scrub up (not with an actual scrubbing brush)

So out came the polisher and my famous box or random gels, pastes, waxes and other bits.

Im still learning and a friend of mine works at Oxford mIni plant paint shop and is the bollocks at anything dented, scratched or painted so can run to him if i mess anything up haha.

So here are some pics of my work.

Started off with taking the side strips off and soaking in the bath for a bit to clean off any crap, whilst that was happening, clean car fully etc then polish goes on.

Started again and here, all finished.

Even polished all the crevis's

Shame about the boot full of broken BMW lol (the towel has a bleeding turbo inside it)

And the roof

Then hooverd and got all the inside spotless and smelling awsome thanks to some spray stuff my mother had, which is EPIC!

So, there was my weekend.

Arms hurting - Yes
Look on face when finished! - PRICELESS!

Now i want to drive it...>AND I CANT!

Long story short we have subsidence in our kitchen which is being sorted by insurance so far so good! However in order to do the repairs our H/W cylinder and rats nest of plumbing needs to come out and go back.

The tank is ancient and insulation flaking so that should be changed anyway but the whole assembly and boiler position makes kitchen planning a nightmare! So i'm thinking whilst the plimbing is all apart it would make sense to sling the plumbers a combi and have them fit it seeing as they'll be doing 90% of the work anyway!

So first up whats a good and VFm unit? Its a 3 bed house, one kitchen, one bath/ w/c.

Well, back in an E34, was mine before and mjeones before that. Mjeone spent lots replacing suspension, exhaust ( with an SS item ), numerous engine sensors etc etc, lots of servicing and lots of extras. I got it and put an interior in it , a black roof lining and interior from a late sport, a set of paras ( inc spare) and lots of other bits n pieces

So its back ....needs a couple of bits attended to

Needs a NSR Window regulator
a good buff to bring paint back up to scratch
Two inner headlights ...got these so will be done asap
Exhaust mounting rubber
want to put OEM radio / cassette in it

put a set of genuine mats in courtesy of Calypos E34 :)on the to do list

want to replace bonnet with wide version
would love a non spoiler bootlid
toying whether to get the original amber lenses back in it
should i go real OEM and put my TRX metrics on it !!

I've put a couple of posts on about my 535 not doing more that about 34 mpg on a run. A couple of weeks ago I took it to an Indy in Exeter called Paddock Motors to have the swirl flats done. Whilst it was there I asked them to look into the high MPG. They said there were a load of faults stored about air velocity. They cleared all faults and told me to bring it back after a week and they'd check the codes again. This time the faults were air flow/EGR valve.

So it went in on Friday to have the eork done and I was prepared for a fairly hefty bill. I got a call just after mid day to say it was fixed! They'd found a "massive" air leak which they fixed. Total cost all in £42.00 - £10.50 of that was the courtesy car!

When I drove away from the garage the OBC started to show 40+ MPG - first time I've seen that!!

So if you're in the South West and need a good honest Indy I'd recommend Paddock Motors in Exeter.

Afternoon,
I have a 2006 535d m Sport which with the recent heavy rain has started to let water into the cabin, in quite a big way. Ive read up on the forums about drains blocked under the e-box etc but when i pulled the seats out of mine I found over 2 inches of water under the rear seat! and that is already well clear of the floor, so i couldnt see how that amount of water could have got there from a leak at the front. I havent yet checked the sunroof drains, but again, its a serious amount of water in there.
So the rear seat is out, as is all the rear lining pieces and sound deadening, ive been thru a hand carwash and just had them jet the car slowly, I cant do it myself because we have a hosepipe ban here!!!!!!!! But not a drop found its way in!!!!
So does anyone have any other suggestions for me to look into? My subwoofers have only just dried out!!!!!! and I dont want to put everything back before I know ive found and cured the problem!!
Any suggestions gratefully received!!

Hi guys, had this for a couple of months now. Used this forum to solve a few queries so thought it was about time I put a little project thread up. Cant believe how much car you get for your money and honestly think its one of the best cars ive driven!

Previous owner had a small thread on here, he changed the bumpers and kept the car clean and I purchased this car from him last month after seeing it on eBay.

Its a nice tidy 2000 528i, M-sport bumpers, suspension, etc

Heres some pictures from when I brought it

Since owning it I have put plenty of miles on it and kept it clean, I work for a race team and had a day off today so used all the cleaning gear for a nice clean and sorted the engine bay

Only other thing i need to do is sort this one fault code out that i found today using the AutoBoss at work . .

So will try and get that sorted asap Plans for next few months are as follows . .

>> change chrome window trim to shadowline
>> Colour code black bumper strips
>> Change backbox for a straight stainless section
>> K&N panel filter
>> White marker bulbs and HID kit

Should keep me busy for a bit!

I seem to have an issue the airbag light abs light and asc lights never illuminate

i have checked in fuse box and FUSE 17 is missing but all other fuses relating to abs asc and airbag are present and ok
