  1. Project 'Magic Carpet' is underway and I would like to hear from SE saloon owners who have found nice quiet and comfortable 16 in tyres in 225/55/16 flavour. I drive the car quite sedately so any tyre will be good enough in terms of grip, braking, wear, cost etc so only interested in comments on tyre road noise inside the car at this time. I did a trawl on this some time ago on here and got some good feedback. I will be ready to pull the trigger soon on a new set so I just wanted to throw the question out there again for some discussion from new members or those members that may have missed it. Thanks. B.

SE Saloon quiet tyres - some feedback please.

Thanks for the input, most tyres are quiet on new smooth tarmac, how are your P3's on the "normal" UK roads ? What size are you running ? Cheers.

SE Saloon quiet tyres - some feedback please.

Can you let me know your thoughts on interior road noise from these P3's on various road surfaces ? Thanks.

SE Saloon quiet tyres - some feedback please.

Thanks for the reply, would you go as far as to say they are silent on all roads ?
  5. Anyone changed the front ARB on a saloon ? Only one YouTube vid on this and the guy had the sub frame lowered, engine support in place and looked like a bit of hassle. Is all this really necessary or can it be wiggled out of the side ? Cheers. B

How easy to change saloon front ARB ?

Thanks Dan but I will be sticking with standard bushing, the handling is firm enough, actually too firm, I drive the car sedately and the purpose of project Majic Carpet is to sofen eveything up. I want the lovely looks of the Sport but with the uber comfy ride of the SE. Going double glazing and everything.

How easy to change saloon front ARB ?

Thanks for this, but just to be clear, I was asking about the anti roll bar, not the bushes. Certainly won't be fitting Poly bushes, no need for Poly anywhere for normal road use. They are much harder and will transmit more harshness into the ride defeating the object of my project. Poly should only be considered for a competition build. were you able to get the roll bar out and clear of the car ? Cheers.

    Saloon rear door water ingress

The car is normally garaged overnight but it was stuck out in the heavy rain last night. Today I discover water dripping out of the bottom of the rear doors when opened and the NSR footwell carpet is soaking. I am sure I have read something about this, maybe on here so I suspect that this is a known issue ? The car is rust free and I want to keep it that way so what needs to be done to rectify this quickly ? I checked the drain holes in the lower door frame and they seem to be clear. Any advice ?

    number plate bulbs

Surely the sensible thing would be to have your number plate lights as dim as possible but within the law, dont want to make it too easy for the cops to take your number do we !

    BMW INPA free download ?

Is it possible to download genuine BMW INPA onto an Android tablet for free ? Any links for a good non dodgy copy ?

    BMW INPA free download ?

I now have it downloaded onto my Samsung Android tablet and it pairs OK with the £5 Bluetooth adapter I have. Not had time to put it to the test yet but will report back when I do.

    BMW INPA free download ?

BMW INPA is now successfully installed on my Android tablet, the OBD Bluetooth adapter is the same as the £4 one I bought for my Focus so will give it a whirl over the weekend.

    BMW INPA free download ?

Ah ok, so I assume the software is loaded onto a laptop and connected with the special cable to do the business ? I dont have a laptop, desktop and Android tablet only so maybe time to invest in a Windows laptop for diagnostics and coding ?

  17. Went in for its MOT this afternoon, failed on one thing, the DSC is not working. Before I roll my sleeves up and start the diagnostics, are there any known issues with this to give me a head start ? No light on the button or dash icon.

Traction Control (DSC) MOT fail !

If I get the DSC light coming on then I will of course check it out for a fault but so far it been working perfectly ! As I said, it's a bit weird.

    Android headunits

Anyone looking for a good head unit solution I would highly recommend you take a good look at AudioTech Direct based in N. Wales. I recently bought their BM5839B, 7inch Android 8.0 unit for my 2003, 525i Sport for £289 delivered and it is a superb piece of kit. They supply the Eonon Chinese units built to their own specs. Very reliable, does everything you could possibly want and more. The customer service at ATD is excellent. Mine has the latest iGo sat nav maps, AM/ FM/ DAB radio. CD/ DVD/ TV. Bluetooth 4.0 hands free supporting Android & iPhone. WiFi internet & Google browser. Torque OBD2 App. Supports reverse cam. Custom start screen for that OEM look, I don’t like the “Disco” look of Sony, Kenwood, Alpine etc. Great sound improvement on standard speakers & nice equaliser. Simple to fit, plug & play and fully integrates with the cars Canbus system. All cables etc supplied. I can’t speak highly enough about ATD and the Eonon units, very highly recommended for the E39. A nice 9 inch version is also available but does not have a CD player. https://audiotechdirect.com/oem-style-units/bmw/ Here's my installation. After struggling for an hour to get the original BMW unit out, I had this in and up and running in 10 mins. A lovely fit. Very pleased indeed. Custom BMW 'M' Start up screen for that OEM look .... nice !
  22. I'm pretty sure most saloon owners have got a faded and slightly purple rear shelf ! Mine is coming out soon for rear suspension work so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good product to re-colour the shelf back to original ? looking for something heat and UV resistant.

Traction Control (DSC) MOT fail !

Well I got this fixed but what I found was a bit weird, I thought I should start with the basics and pulled the instrument cluster to check the bulb in the DSC light. Of course there is no bulb, just tiny LED's. the DSC one was covered with black silicone to blank it, so I am thinking, OK there is a fault and someone has blanked out the light rather than fix the problem, I cleaned all the silicone stuff out and now the DSC light works as it should, a few days driving around now and all is well, passed the MOT today so happy days !
  24. Been looking for a double glazing kit for my 525i saloon. Not much out there and what I found so far the asking price is laughable. So, I have a cunning plan, a plan so cunning, the sly fox with an honours degree in the art of cun would be very proud of ! I found an SE saloon breaking locally and I can get all six side windows for a tenner each. I'm thinking I should grab these, take my windows out and take everything to a good double glazing unit manufacturer and have them seal them together. If I can find the correct thickness and all the guide channel rubbers, weather strips & seals etc, I may be in business ! I am now working in the aircraft parts recycling business and I was handling double glazed Airbus cockpit window units today and it gave me the idea. What do you chaps think ?

E39 SALOON DIY DOUBLE GLAZING IDEA !

Thanks Dennis, I note what you say. I think getting the DG units made is the easy bit, sourcing all the right rubber window guides, weather strips and seals etc is the tricky part. To be honest, from my experience in the trade, I think insurance companies would be more interested in lowered suspension and non standard tyres than DG side windows. Anyway, if the project goes ahead I will photograph everything as I go and put up a guide on what to do with costs. I'm on 48hr weeks at the moment so it might be a while !
