  1. F10 520d Exhaust fumes in cabin

I will do a write up soon. However I decided that instead of repairing it I will just fit a new one. As I have done the job myself I have saved a fair chunk anyway. I picked the new cooler up today.

In order what I did Removed the forward under tray Removed the engine cover Remove the turbo intake pipe with mass airflow pipe and air plenium Drained all the coolant out the lower radiator hose. Remove the egr cooler Obviously that’s a very vague overview, I would be happy to write up in a bit more detail if people would like me to. I found it very very easy to remove. I think I am going to repair it as I have nothing to loose, if it doesn’t work then I will buy one. I think I have decided on a repair procedure, I can share that as well if anyone is interested?

I have managed to get the EGR cooler out today and as you can see from the pictures there is bypass pipe that is cracked in between the expansion bellows. I am thinking about repairing it but I may buy a new one, still undecided.
  4. BMW Carley order problems

Ok thanks for the reply guys, I did use PayPal and I have opened a case.
  5. Has anyone ever had any problems with ordering through Carley? I have ordered a Carley Bluetooth OBD apadter on the 6th of December at it still hasn’t delivered. I have also contacted them and have had no reply.

Thanks for the update! I am still waiting for the weather to improve to do mine. It obviously seems to be a common problem, the service guy said there had been 128 egr coolers ordered throughout BMW dealership. They won’t admit it will they! More dosh for them!

I am waiting for the weather to improve and then I will remove the cooler. I will post pictures of my findings.

For anyone that’s interested this is what our LEL meter looks like. We use ours for measuring gasses inside aircraft fuel tanks.
  9. F10 520d Exhaust fumes in cabin

We have a bit of kit at work called an LEL meter which is designed to detect dangerous gases. Our one has an external probe so can be placed in the tightest of locations. When placed near the two known leaking spots (as I have mentioned about) there is no reading at all. When placed close to the egr cooler it goes crazy and the alarm sounds for dangerous gases detected. There is a crack somewhere on the back of it. I am going to remove the egr cooler and and try to find the crack visually, if I cant then I will pressurise it. If it does not hold pressure then I know there is 100% a leak, in that case I will weld the crack and refit (if I can find it). There is also a chance that the egr cooler case has gone porus. Worse case scenario is a new egr cooler, fortunately I can purchase bmw parts for cost price.

Purchased it this evening, thanks for the input!

    Thanks for the reply Dave

So the problem has returned which is really frustrating. After another extensive search to find the problem I have failed to find what the cause is. There are visible exhaust leaks coming from the manifold to the egr supply pipe and also the turbo vane actuator linkage. I have also checked 2 other N47 engines and they all leak at the same place so this isn’t the problem. I am a starting to suspect the EGR cooler as there seems the be a small deposit of soot build up underneath it. I am going to remove and inspect it in the near future. Of course this means draining all the coolant. What I do find strange is that the engine bay has a rubber seal running around the whole circumference effectively sealing it off from the cabin fan intake, why are there fumes getting into it at all? I have confirmed that with the bonnet open zero fumes, bonnet closed slight engine load fumes return. Pictures and more invest to follow shortly if anyone is interested.

    Thanks very much!!

Where do I get the adapter from? Thanks for the reply
  15. Code reader/reset

Bmw 520d 2012 Has anyone got any recommendations for an OBD2 basic code reader that can also reset engine management lights? There are lots on eBay and not sure which one to go for. I already have a 2012 code reader, it reads codes but fails every time I try to reset the management light.
