  1. I've seen these threads all over other forums and I thought why not start one here? It'll be interesting to see what you guys get up to with your bimmers! Might give me some ideas on what to do too as mine is still completely stock. Let's go!
  2. Invested in a CTEK MXS battery charger in the hope of clearing the "Replace battery" warning I've been seeing over the past year.

    Picked up my 520d Luxury

Welcome along! It has to be said that is one very highly specced F10, must be an absolute pleasure to drive. The forum is a great place for answering any queries, lots of helpful chaps on hand. Hope the car serves you well for many miles to come.

    BMW EGR "Technical Campaign"

Does anyone know if the 245PS N57 is affected by the EGR cooler failures? I can't say I've noticed any symptoms in the 3 years I've owned my 2010 model.

    Self ignition

Glad to hear no one was hurt, however the owner must be pretty shaken up. Very disconcerting.

    Thoughts on the F01 7'er

AFAIK the N57 (as found in the F01) doesn't appear to face the same swirl flaps troubles as the M57 following a new design, but intake manifolds are prone to excessive carbon build up - more of an issue on vehicles that have endured multiple short journeys. Other than that these motors are generally quite robust.

    DPF Regen every 300 miles

A high mileage DPF will likely be filled with ash so the real capacity falls - could be the cause for more frequent regens.

    First world F10-series problems

Its thirst for washer fluid - the headlight washers do not help in this regard!

  10. Agreed, just enquired on the cost of new plugs and it came in to ~£300 so not the end of the world. The F10 has been faultless otherwise in the time I've owned it. The G30's seem to be carrying quite a premium over F10's atm which is a shame as would love to properly experience a petrol BMW before they're legalised off the roads. Perhaps its time to jump in to an F10 M5!
  11. Oh I wish! Recently had the house renovated otherwise an M5 would already be sitting in the driveway! Wouldn't want one without a warraty mind, but they are tempting at £29k for 40k miles on AUC. Not sure the other half would approve however.
  12. In fairness I've not yet shopped around regarding the glow plugs but a quick google search suggests it should be in the region of £300 all in, which is less than I expected. However I was less impressed when looking at tyres where the cheapest I found were £143 per corner; may consider non RFTs / part-worns if these prices are anything to go by.
  13. I know that both Birmingham and Southampton have recently proposed low emission zones similar to that in London so its only time till every other town follows suit. If I were to get rid of the car now I'd hope there wouldn't be as hard a hit in depreciation as there would be if I sold it in say 2-3 years time when these ULEZ's become increasingly commonplace. I suspect big diesel's won't be all that attractive by then...
  14. Thanks chaps, however am now debating whether to get rid of it or not what with the recent ULEZ proposals and 2040 diesel ban. As this is a 2010 model it only adheres to the Euro 5 regs so would be subject to charges within these zones. It also needs a bit spent on it, including 6 glow plugs and controller, tyres all around and an oil service. Just thinking what my options are ATM and whether its worth spending a bit and keeping it a bit longer, or if I'd be better off trading it in for something newer/cleaner.
  15. Gave it a wash a couple of days ago - love Deep Sea Blue when clean, but doesn't work so well during the colder months IMO... (excuse the iPhone picture quality)

What did you do to your E60/61 today?

In response to the vid - all I have to say is holy f**k! Would give M5's a real hard run for their money thats for sure! Wow.

  18. @535i Andrew I don't think its anything to worry about - My brother in law has a 335i which I believe has the same N55 motor as the F10. Even after sustained motorway speeds the temp needle did not exceed the temperature shown above. Must simply be a characteristic of the engine.

    Real world mpg and range

I have no doubt in the capabilities of modern turbo 4 bangers , but the fact remains that a larger engine is going to produce more torque allowing for more effortless power delivery. And if going for petrol due to low miles the added fuel costs of the 6cyl will be negligible.

    Real world mpg and range

Can't imagine a 4 cylinder petrol would suit the 5 very well - it's a bus after all! It will constantly need to be revved to get anywhere, therefore leading to higher fuel consumption respectively. What it needs is plenty of low down torque, something even the 4 pot diesels deliver quite well. If going for petrol due to mileage, I'd definitely be considering the 6 cylinder 540i as fuel economy is likely to be near enough identical to that of the 520i as it needn't work so hard to build momentum. In theory anyway...

Smoke from engine and yellow engine dash light

Could be a cracked manifold or something. I'm not all that mechanically minded sorry! Try posting this in the F10 area - you'll get better coverage from other N57 30d drivers who may have experienced similar symptoms.

Smoke from engine and yellow engine dash light

Sounds like a dud MAF sensor judging by the codes. Could also be caused by heavy city driving leading to a large build up of particulates and the exhaust never getting hot enough to initiate an active regen. When was the last time you took it for a spirited motorway blast? To encourage regen you'll need to drive at speeds of over 60mph for at least 30 mins.

    Remanufactured Turbo Vs New (F10/F11)

Have owned 3 diesel cars and not one has ever required a turbo replacement. Currently own a 2006 Toyota Verso which has required no work whatsoever in all the 200k miles it’s covered. However, should the turbo ever require replacement I’d easily go OEM, simply for the peace of mind it offers. No point tearing the engine apart only to find the refurbished turbo blows up a week later! Just my opinion...

New car time - decisions decisions

I'd rather a 640d over an A7 personally, not least due to the twin turbo engine. Driven a 335d with the same unit and suffice to say it does not hang around! Good luck with the search.

    The new motor.

Quite the looker - usually not too fond of so called 'SUVs' myself, but VW have done a nice job here. The side profile is very X5-esque IMO, which is no bad thing. Lets hope it gives you many trouble-free miles. Enjoy it!
