    So with you guys removing the brake protection plates do you replace? I've fixed mine with a washer as long as the rot or corrosion around the existing bolt hole is not severe. I think they are a knuckle off job to replace?

    You can detach the light from 4 points and detach the bulbs and leave the unit in a warm dry place for a couple of days like airing cupboard if you feel lazy

    So what do you guys do... usual areas of bubbling inc rear section sill, tailgate, arches I dont want to get serious paint done but rather prefer to deal locally with the issue to prevent it spreading... is there such a thing? would be keen to hear from anyone that has successfully halted the spread of the stuff before it claims those timeless lines!

    if you get smell coming through the cabin when the engine is warm then def cam cover or more likely cam cover gasket failing... they tend to towards the rear and the oil weeps/drips onto the exhaust manifold if your car has done 70k plus miles then it should have had it changed once... ive had 3 m54 engined cars and all of them needed it at around that mileage
  8. as said above i would bet its potentially the rear wishbone or upper control arms... i had a wobble and it was partly cured by replacing the front bushes (you didnt mention you had changed yours), the front ARB drop links and the rear upper control arm/guidelink i still had a bit of a wobble after replacing the the front bushes and the arb drop links and was beginning to wonder about discs. i then had the rear upper arms replaced and they were very loose in the ball joint (not bush) end look in the parts catalogue and the rear suspension has a wishbone shaped link and a straight one. you can check play with car jacked up and shake the hub side to side

    Looking for a set of 16" style 48, 18, 32 or 33's (7x16 et 20) ideally with premium branded winter tyres in a 225/55/16 size with a date of manufacture of 2014 or later happy to consider wheels or tyres standalone!
  12. ive been getting the 'no discs' message on teh head unit despite changing cartridges. is it a new changer job to resolve? assume there isnt anything in inpa that can help clear teh fault given its more mechanical failure?

    copper nickel here.... good shout on getting the underside prepped and treated. the sills around jacking point on mine were not looking too happy in terms of cost i would budget for around 5 hours labour.... it could take less but i was very happy with the quality of the work and peace of mind

    So having had my second e39 baseline inspected shortly after it was bought earlier this year the pipes were flagged as a need to do now issue. Had them done and for posterity kept the old ones. Having examined them I have to confess that I was shocked at their condition. The sections around the rear diff area were especially bad and in some points the corrosion had substantially thinned the wall of the pipe. The runs went straight from the rear and followed the correct path into the joint rear of the osf wheel. Rear axle was dropped for access so not something that I would feel brave enough to do at home. Feel better now it's been done and no risk of catastrophic brake failure. Russ at Dm worx in stoke mandeville did mine and he takes a lot of pride in his pipes as can be seen in his nut and bolt rebuilt e36 m3 evo coupe. I'm quite fussy but having seen how he painstakingly formed the pipe (not pure copper) even I was impressed If your pipes have been advised during an mot might be worth getting them looked at very closely whilst the car is on a ramp! Unfortunately I forgot to take pics of the new ones in situ
  15. Lemforder supply 2 versions. One for pre 01 and another for 01 onwards. I may have the dates a bit off but can't check at the mo. Does anyone know the difference other than about 35 quid difference per unit? I can't find any technical specs but can try lemforder in the morning.

  17. a friend may be passed on a 1 owner from new 523i saloon with fsh and about 70k miles.... what would be the likely range valuation wise that he needs to think about? would about 500-1500 be about right?

    I had the same issue with aalignment so used another vehicle as a proxy. All you need is a wall or similar and measuring tape. Use the reference car to establish the height of the beam at a given distance between the lens and surface. Crude but should help get them beam roughly right. To get even more precision get the same amount of fule and load in them!

    nice job on the lens... i did a set of adjusters and went in through the back. what a pita. may need to do another one. requires lots of patience and theres a great youtube vid by an american chap.

Alas that time of year again and im wondering what to go for this time.... its currently wearing glorious style 66's with dunlop sportmaxx (were already on) but ill need something a bit more snow friendly.... the alpina has some aging pilot alpins on 16" style 44s which look crap but they were cheap and alpina are quite specific on tyre choice my previous e39 had nokians on style 81s which i think looked ok but it was a 17" rim so not ideal... not sure i can stomach turbines so i guess its 48s or 18s? as the 66's have different offsets front and rear do i need to use spacers?
