  1. Thanks all. I've got a pal who works for BMW and he's ordering me up a clutch cup to see if we can fix it without replacing the box. If we manage it I'll update.
  2. Thanks gents, that's good to know. That being the case I reckon I'll have to scrub up the wonga for a decent used box and ask my friendly mechanic to help stick it in. Appreciate the comments.
  3. Morning all, My beloved 530i Sport shat its gearbox last night so I'm having a bit of a head scratch as to what to do. I'm as skint as an extra in Oliver Twist so the option of spending £1.5k+ on a recon box / fitting just isn't there. I've got the chance to buy a mate's car for a good price but I need to know what sort of cash I may realise from breaking the E39. Can anyone advise? I know it's not an exact science but a ballpark figure would be useful. 2001 Facelift 530i Sport Auto Silver with immaculate grey leather 140k miles Aftermarket xenon headlights All round great condition - few paint bubbles here and there, worst is boot lid. Cheers all, Ben

    Rear door won't open

Thanks, it's been in the garage all day so I'll have a try later after work. If/when I get it open I'll lube it up good and proper!

    Rear door won't open

Hello gents, wonder if anyone has an idea about this: Was very cold up here in t'Dales last night and the car (2001 E39) was all frozen up this morning. Front door opened fine and I went to sling the kids school bags on the back seat and the rear door wouldn't close - essentially frozen open. I tried about 20 times to close it but no joy, in a rush I drove off with it not latched just to get some heat into the car hoping to thaw it. Half a mile later I pulled over to close it but still no joy. So I pushed down the lock button and slammed it - all good, door closed, off on the school run! When I got back later and parked up I tried the door and it wouldn't open at all. Both inner and outer handles aren't working. Any ideas?!

This is all very interesting, thanks. Surprised the plate is worth that kind of cash. It does look strangely symmetrically satisfying though!

My M90 with lairy Piper cam and gas flowed/ported/polished head kind of spoiled me a bit!

Good point it being an M20, hadn't thought of that. Wonder if any benefit in buying it cheap, selling plate, selling engine to the E21 boys and parting the rest as it's minty mint.

Thanks James. I don't really have the wedge available to buy it and sit on it for long if I need to put more into it. Oh for oodles of free dough! Good point on the plate though. If it were worth something I could feasibly buy the car, sell the plate and just stick it in the workshop as is for half a decade or so!

The body is definitely spotless. I'm speaking as a bloke who has restored a Citroen DS back to bare metal and back up again so checked properly! I'm thinking if I can get it cheapy cheap I could put a few dozen hours into it and flip it for some cash to spend on one of my other cars. Tricky decision.

The plate is a standard UK mainland plate - from the very first ones actually, 1903-1930 (the sort that started with A1 and ended with XX9999 I think).
