    E34 MOT

When I had it the only oil leak was from a split breather pipe (replaced with new BMW one) and the cam cover seal was shot, so adjusted those and replaced the seal at the same time!

Hence acquiring a new car and a complete change of work life/learning I no longer have time to keep this is as my second car. So I have decided to end this project and sell her as she is, which is a good run around! Here is the link http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/61136-1988-bmw-e34-530i-manual-for-sale/

    1988 530i Restoration

Finally got my computer back up and running, I've had the biggest mare with that I can tell ya! Anyway here are the promised pics of the bush replacement... After a lot of preparing, researching and money spending I finally had all the bits and tools for the job! Getting ready to pull one of the bushes out! Once they started to go it was pretty easy going from there......either that or I was lucky that day! As you can see that is one disgusting looking bush! Everything as it should be! All nice and new!!!!!!!!! So now I'm at that point where the car drives great, its transformed it! Which also means there isn't really any pressing jobs to do now. I'd like to next, replace the window wiper linkage and sort my fan blower out as its noisy. After that I can turn my attention to tidying up the interior which is in very good shape anyway, just needs a tad of tlc here and there. Considering getting a donor car as a parts donkey now, next year should see work progressing on the body work. And hopefully I will be left with a very presentable a good driving car!

    1988 530i Restoration

Well after lots of researching and running around I got all the bits I needed to do the big job replacing the bushes and links in the back axle and the results are awesome! I can now go round corners with great confidence, and the stiffness in the car is really reassuring. No more floaty self steering feeling from the back, just full on grip! I got a great deal of information from a thread on the e28 section on this forum that runs into great detail of how to remove the bushes. Mine were so bad that the metal insert that runs through the center fell out with the bolt. A vague kind of look hit my face when I saw just how bad they were and how long ive probably been driving it like that. Why it wasn't picked up on a MOT years ago I don't know, I refuse to believe its happened in the 11 months of my ownership. Ive done nothing but replace worn out parts. Me and my mate did a dual attack of heat guns on each side of the old bush in the axle untill it was smoking and red hot before we even tried to pull it out. Then with one us using the puller made up of a threaded bar, 2 legged puller, various size washers and bits and pieces it eventually came out with not much fuss. But it was then a case of where to put the red hot smouldering black rubber potato after that. Which meant a good drop to the floor . After a good clean of everything the new ones went back in easy, even easier when we found out what combination of bits to use (Which was a nightmare, we spent more time fluffing around with tools then actual work) but once that was figured out it was easy to do the other side and probably took about an hour to remove it and refit with new and change the links. I just like to also add I replaced all bolts I removed with brand new ones to make everything completely tight again. I have got a few pics to add to this but alas my computer is down, needs to be reinstalled with windows and ive probably lost a lot of info on there buts for another day! Right whats next......................................

Need some help removing my fuel pump......

Thanks Seventhirtyeye! I thought it may have been but best to ask first before breaking it! I actually want to check the sender unit out as when I fill the tank up I always get it reading 3/4 full. So its either getting stuck/had it (Will check resistance etc at empty) or my dash has some dodgy capacitors......but I think the problem lays in the sender unit as the dash is fine as far as I can tell.
  8. Well this is my latest headache........Am I right in assuming that I have to pull off item 3 which is labelled as lock? This sits on top of the sender unit underneath the metal panel in the boot. All I know is it won't budge! So its either twist off or pull off, anyone point me in right direction so I don't break it. Thanks in advance Rob

    1988 530i Restoration

Its been a while since ive updated this thread! Finally got around to getting the car up on the ramp to have a good look at the suspension/bushes! The front is solid, so no need to go spending there yet. However I was completely shocked at the rear.........the axle carrier mounts are horrifying. So much play its unreal, no wonder I have a funny feel in the steering wheel as my back end is probably steering its self. The drop links are f**ked as well (technical word!) so its getting new bushes, drop links, anti roll ball links and bushes to refresh it. Ive just been under the car today changing the exhaust mounting rubbers at the rear of the mid silencer as I spotted one was torn and the other overly stretched supporting all that weight. So that has been done as the last thing I want now is the exhaust to drop! I have had only one real issue with the car this week, it started bunny hopping around everywhere and struggling with power. Turned out to be the maf, I unplugged it....gave it a quick clean and its been spot on since. I think that maybe the flap got stuck in there and choked the engine! If it does it again then a new one will be on order! So next weekend is the big fix on the rear axle which should be entertaining! Just ordering loads of new bolts now so everything is new and tight! Can't wait to get it done and have a tight feeling car again! I will take some pics and stuff when ive done the job!

    Anyone one keep reefs?

@Raymond, yes 800ltrs is a big undertaking! Makes my tank a baby! Im going to be getting another tank running soon to grow corals in and sell for cheap to hopefully sorta make it pay for itself. Id love a 800ltr reef, but then if I could afford to even set one of them up id probably pay someone to look after it. But that's after a lotto win!

Ah cool, yeah I could be interested in that! Im not big on the real names of the fish. I get lost there. And yes I skimmers should be a chamber where the height of the water never drops. So they run at optimum performance. On a sumped system only the last chamber should drop down in water (Where the return pump is), I used to run a sumped tank and had an auto top up on it. Works wonders on a sumped tank. Yes cleaner shrimp do rock, they are good at cleaning dead skin off your hands too!

Looks that way, ive put down a list of jobs I want to do. Some are priority and some are whenever I can be bothered. And yes what kind of idiot garage puts down they cut open a door card to gain access to the actuator. COWBOYS!

@Raymond. Nice one! I do like piranhas but they don't do much unless you chuck meat in! I did start off in the world of tropical's, kept them for about 10years. Then broke the tank down and got rid of it. Then I wanted to a get a tank again and plunged into the world of marines. Hard work but rewarding.

    Anyone one keep reefs?

I find my RSM a great bit of kit (Not the cheapest but I wanted something that did it all!). I haven't got a chiller as it really doesn't need it. I find the fans in the hood draw most the heat away from the lights and it usually sits at 24.5c and when it warms up a bit I put the cooling fan on which fires air down the last filter chamber causing it to evaporate quick and that seems very effective at keeping it cool. I do have an external filter running with a reactor plumbed on to the end of it as Ive got a well stocked tank now. Im getting into my LPS and SPS now. Ive had an Acan for about a year now which had 3 heads on it at first, now its got somewhere in the region of 50! So I must be doing something right. I did used to have a bicolour blenny, great little character he was. But I lost him and few other fish/corals when a torch coral decided to die on me. Returned to that after a weekend away so I dunno what happened there. The fish I have at the moment are a mated pair of firefish, a mated pair of orchid dotty backs. And a yellow watchman goby. Cleaner shrimp and various hermit crabs, conch's, turbo snails etc. Is the book on breeding?
