The materials felt better quality. Also I have viewed a few E60's including a couple 2009 models and they seem to wear pretty badly as many trims are peeling off. Also the climate control buttons look much better. These are only my opinions so everyone may not agree.

For me the E90 was much better in terms of interior quality, N57 engine and CIC. Yes late E60's did have CIC but they are still quite rare.

Just to update this thread. Ive had a look at several LCI E60's have decided its not for me. I drove a LCI E90 330d last week which I preferred. Also I found the interior of an LCI E90 (with sat nav) much much better than an E60. Quality was an improvement. So im now looking to buy a LCI E90 325/330d N57.

Thank you for the kind and very generous offer. I'm not too far in Lancashire. I'll try and find another local 525d first.

520d N47. Would you buy one?

Sounds good. Also im assuming its only a few that have got issues, the large majority are fine.

  9. Following on from this thread, im looking at buying a 520d N47. http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/99120-lci-mpg/ The only thing is putting me off is the timing chain failures on the N47. I understand that it only affects some cars, not all but its still putting doubts in my mind. So what would you do? Would you buy a 520d N47? Are there any preventative maintanance you can do to avoid this? One option is to get a warranty but it cost £580 a year from warranty direct.

Just to update. I test drove a 520d N47 and a 525d 3.0 today. Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised with the 520d. A lot more refined and quite than I thought it would be. Performance wasnt huge but more than adequate. Also was getting very good MPG, almost 50! First impressions of the 525d was it didnt sound any more refined or quiter than the 520d. I was expecting a large difference as everyone says the 6 cyl is much better but i didnt notice it. Performance was very good though, it had plenty of power. But on my test drive which was main 50mph roads, it was only averaging mid 30's. This has made me thing twice as I do around 25k miles a year. So now im thinking of a 520d N47 but the timing chain makes me worry a bit. So im in a bit of a dillemma.

I presume you have a pre lci 520d? That is why I started this thread. The figures show a lci 525d is more economical than a pre lci 520d.

Quiz: 535d manual option - how much?

Agree with most comments here, no E60 535d was available with a manual gearbox. The 550i was offered with a manual gearbox but the 550i has less torque of 490NM. Someone mentioned a 550i with 600nm, that is the F10 model not E60. The manual gearbox in F10's have a higher torque capacity than those in E60.

Should last more than 2 years if there genuine parts. I presumed he used non genuine parts which do tend to fail much quicker.

Figures show a LCI 530d is around 13% more economical than a 530d pre lci. The figures in my first post are for LCI.
