Did you get as far as a price for the actual bulb? Eye watering I expect. I replaced them on my z4 a year or so ago after one did exactly as you describe, turned purpley pink in colour. As for the diagnostic fee, I once phoned to book my m3 in for a rear spring replacement, the advisor on the phone said I'd have to pay a diagnostic charge and when questioned why, very sarcastically said 'well what makes you think it needs changing'. When I responded that I had half of it in my hand his attitude suddenly changed and there was no fee!

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Be VERY careful with the straps , they can do loads of damage to paintwork if it's blowing a bit. I had a tarpaulin type cover on my kit car which had elasticated straps, paintwork suffered badly, now have a Noah car cover (actually for a Mazda2 but not a bad fit, soft cover, no straps other than the one that goes under the car, perfect.

Received the top cover today that I'd ordered and tried it for size. Bought it to use during prolonged periods of not using the car, summer and winter. Will keep all the crud off the window and sunfoof trims and generally go a small way to protecting the upper paintwork from all the extreme weather we tend to get these days. Probably doesn't need it but it makes me feel better about trying to keep it in good nick!

    Problems with BMW battery

I hardly think they would have time to search forums to try to weedle out of warranty claims, never mind being able to connect the two events. However I have just ordered a Bosch unit from Euro Car Parts for £110 including free same day delivery.

    Problems with BMW battery

I replaced my battery with a yuasa a few weeks ago,£94 with trade discount. Top tip, put your receipt in a food bag and gaffer tape it onto the battery, you’ll never lose it then .

Like suggested there is no occupancy sensor on driver seat. This must be a diagnostic glitch with LHD/RHD.

    Problems with BMW battery

As d_a_n1979 said no coding needed for e39. ECP currently have 45% off batteries. https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BMW_5+Series_3.0_2003/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/electrical/car-battery/?444771107&1&2a222a6245d0e5c144f50ce27337468b16040e11&000020 I wouldn’t bother with BMW warrenty.

Thought I would report back on this for anyone who is reading this thread in the future (so frustrating when people don't say how they fixed things lol) After chasing just about everything I arrived back at the fuel pump. I fitted one from a running car and hey presto it fired straight up. Obviously there is something that the ECU needs to see from the pump to fire the injectors.

I'm similar to you TARBY, had all new tyres and hunter alignment and balancing done. Vibration whilst driving @ 70 - 80 have disappeared and the vibration when braking has been reduced allot but still present. All disc and pads were inspected and no lip wear etc.

Lovely car...suggest you get some Dodo juice leather sealant on those chairs as soon as you can. It reduces transfer but makes cleaning much easier when it's needed.

Be interested to see how you find the VDC, I had it on my Se spec F10 (also had 7 cracked 364 alloys) and I find the ride better on my 530D M sport X drive with 20 inch rims (non VDC) on par with the F10 so far, only got her sat ☺️. I was was so close to getting the 540i like yourself.. enjoy it.

I use offshore silver spray, it's a silver ceramic spray that leaves a very thin coat that won't come off. Part number NOR2894449 from https://www.carparts4less.co.uk use code payday at the checkout. Handy to have a tin to stop stuff sticking and can be used on brake calipers as well to stop pad squeal along with bolts under the car once torqued up to stop them corroding together.

Long time since an update so here goes. Car has been fired and up to temp with no problems boot floor has been modified for the modified Hayward and Scott exhausts and sound amazing. Brakes all fitted with new braided lines. First in the uk heated sport steering wheel. Interior started to go back in. Installed a thatcham 2 immobiliser while I had dash out and found a neat place for it to hide. Also installed the electric steering column I’ve had a few years lol. Also got some alcantara covered seat bases

Collected the car this morning; alloys fully refurbed and powdercoated. Finish is Platinum Silver New centre caps; Richbrook stainless steel valves & an 82mm Mtec stud conversion fitted with 5mm hubcentric shims upfront and 12mm hubcentric spacers on the rears. Gives the alloys a much better stance IMO

    Retrofit Towbar

Give Simon a call/mesage on here: https://www.facebook.com/Bavarian-Coding-1404502282915941/ I think I recall him retrofitting the oem electric towbar on a 3 before. Plus he's local to you in Southampton

Ruined my expansion tank due to carelessness/stupidity and cost myself £60 + the screw. It was a brand new tank. Tosser.

    Retrofit Towbar

Hi there the parts are available when I was researching my local BMW garage confirmed they could retrofit for wait for it ......... £2600!!! So clearly the parts are available. I went for factory fitted as it was the best option for me at the time. There is also the annoying German brand car issue that doesn’t wire up the full 13 pins of the electrics so you have to buy an additional kit if you are using to tow a caravan and want fridge electrics etc. Given what main dealers charge for labour it may be possible to source parts only considerably cheaper. ... good luck
